The government delegate in Galicia, Pedro Blanco, highlighted Toques on the government’s commitment to the Galician rural, where it invests 23 million euros for its connectivity through the 5G network. This investment corresponds to the second award of the UNICO 5G Active Networks Program, of the Ministry for the Digital Transition and the Public Service, which the delegate advanced accompanied by the mayor of Toques, José Ángel Dolores, as this is one of the municipalities that benefit from this last call.
Pedro Blanco highlighted the great benefit that this second phase of the program represents for more than 35,000 Galicians and Galicians living in a total of 181 concellos, all of them less than 10,000 inhabitants. In them, 391 actions will be carried out to improve the network infrastructures to adapt them to 5G communications, or to other news facilities if necessary.
Pedro Blanco stressed that the Government, through programs like this one, is strongly committed to a rural living and with a future, “in which who is from here can live here, bringing opportunities and allowing the neighborhood to look to the future.” Introducing the 5G network in rural areas, the government encourages small concellos to attract people, “a goal we are working on, and with actions like this it is clear that we are on the right path.”
In this way, the delegate pointed out that “the Government advances towards a society more just and adapted to progress”. Since 2019, the Government has invested 275 million in the digitalization of Galicia, making it progress and eliminating any technological gap in the territory. This line of aid is intended entirely for concellos of less than 10,000 inhabitants, to provide the rural with the fundamental infrastructures for daily life.
A total of 391 projects between the four provinces “This work has an impact on the well-being of thousands of Galicians and Galicians,” said Pedro Blanco, noting that 391 actions will be carried out in 181 concellos of the Community.
By provinces, A Coruña will receive 9.3 million euros for 98 projects, distributed in 51 municipalities; Lugo, 5.7 M€ for 122, distributed in 50 municipalities; Ourense, 4.7 M€ for 75, distributed in 52 municipalities, and Pontevedra, 3.3 M€ for 96, distributed in 28 municipalities.
Program UNICO 5G Active Networks
El programa UNICO 5G Redes Activas es una iniciativa pionera en Europa. It allocates funds from the Recovery Plan to finance active equipment and the construction of towers that expand the deployment of 5G with full functionality in small municipalities.
The goal is to provide 5G coverage to locations where there is no 4G mobile coverage of at least 50 Mbps downstream, and where it is not expected to be in the next three years. In this way, the Government continues its commitment to ensure that ultra-fast communication networks reach the entire population, including small towns.
5G networks don’t just improve band coverage, they enable the development of applications and services that drive the economy. In the meeting they held, Pedro Blanco reaffirmed to José Ángel Dolores the commitment that the Government has with Toques.
The mayor transferred several projects in public housing, tourism and sanitation, which the delegate will transfer to the corresponding ministries “to continue advancing the services for the citizenship of Toques and deepening the collaboration of this council with the Government.”
