The Government Delegation in Galicia informs that the General Directorate of Traffic will carry out from tomorrow, Monday, until Sunday, 23 a new traffic surveillance and control campaign focused on the supervision of trucks and buses.
The campaign, which will also have the support of the different provincial traffic headquarters, proposes as a fundamental strategy the “zero tolerance with risky behaviors” monitoring for this the most common concurrent causes in the accident, such as distractions, speed and the consumption of alcohol or other drugs.
During the next week the agents of the Traffic Group of the Civil Guard will intensify the work of inspection of vehicles intended for the transport of goods and passengers paying special attention to the documentation of the vehicle, its correct habilitation and inspection (tires, weight, conditioning of the load and proper use of lighting), reviewing the stipulated driving and rest times, as well as excesses of speed and the consumption of alcohol or drugs.
This campaign has a special impact in Galicia where, according to data from February of this year from the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, more than 15,800 freight and bus transport companies operate (on regular and non-regular lines).
With regard to the accident, since 2020 Galicia has added three deaths in trucks less than 3,500 kg. and 8 deaths in trucks over 3,500 kg. In buses, 7 people died in a bus accident that occurred in the province of Pontevedra in the year 2022.
Data from previous campaign
The last special traffic monitoring and control campaign focused on this type of vehicle was held in February 2023. In that campaign, the Civil Guard controlled a total of 4,238 vehicles and 653 were reported. The most frequent reports were due to errors in the documentation of the vehicle (55 reports); problems in the chassis and accessories (50 sanctions) and excess weight (40 reports). In addition to the 173 buses that passed the appropriate controls, 33 were reported (16 in A Coruña, 4 in Lugo and 13 in Pontevedra).
