The government delegate in Galicia, Pedro Blanco, stressed today in Laza (Ourense) that the new base of the BRIF that the government is building in this locality will represent a qualitative leap in the operation of prevention and fight against forest fires in Galicia. Pedro Blanco traveled today to Laza to oversee the implementation of this new base in which the Ministry for Ecological Transition invests about 5.8 million euros of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan. There he was accompanied by the deputy delegate of the Government in Ourense, Eladio Santos; the mayor of Laza, José Ramón Barreal and the head of the Territorial Unit of Tragsa in Galicia, Manuel Villarroel.
Through this project, executed by the Government through the public company Tragsa, Laza will have one of the most advanced and modern forest fire prevention and extinguishing bases in Spain. The performance began in August last year and must be completed before the summer of 2026. For the duration of the works, the staff will occupy provisional facilities that are being finalized at this time.
The new base will have a building in which the necessary units will be located to cover all the needs of the staff (training, rest, administrative and operations management) being equipped with exterior warehouses, an outdoor dining room with cover and parking. Not that it respects the air zone, the runway will be improved by providing it with new security systems.
Experience and training
Pedro Blanco met with members of this highly specialized unit who informed him of his activity throughout the year. The delegate highlighted the high qualification of these brigades, which are part of the state media that the government puts at the disposal of the autonomies for the fight against fire. He also valued the positive impact of the BRIF on the territory “in economic dynamization, in direct jobs and also in the conservation of forest resources that are a source of economic resources for the entire area,” he added. This impact, added the conviction that the improvement of the base of Laza “will have a dynamizing effect in the region.”
On the staff assigned to this base, which adds up to more than 50 people, he highlighted his training and experience, which adds up to 20 years of fighting the fire. It also recognized other services, which go beyond the fire-fighting device. Among these, the delegate highlighted his work in the areas affected by the DANA in Valencia, where a large group of workers from the BRIF of Laza were collaborating in the tasks of cleaning humanitarian care within the team of 300 members of the BRIF from all over Spain displaced by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition.
The delegate confirmed that the Government “is already working on the preparation of the device for next summer, in which, as every year, we will deploy media and personnel from different ministries to give security to Galician mountains”, collaborating with the device of the Autonomous Community.
