Pontevedra, December 16, 2024.- The Civil Traffic Guard launched this morning, with a device on the N-550 road, Nadal’s campaign to control the consumption of alcohol and drugs at the wheel. The subdelegate of the Government, Abel Losada, made a call to responsibility to avoid that during these festive dates the statistics of accidents are thickened.
The Civil Guard, which has the confirmed collaboration of the local police of the municipalities of Cuntis, Gondomar, Marín, Moaña, Poio and Sanxenxo for the realization of this campaign coinciding with a week with many meals and dinners of companies and friendships, will intensify the presence with hundreds of preventive controls throughout the province to encourage responsible and non-substance abuse driving.
Abel Losada was accompanied by the provincial head of Traffic, Paula Yubero, and the captain of the Traffic Subsector, Bruno Tato. The subdelegate explained that so far this year, 4,112 drug tests and another 173,620 alcohol tests have been carried out. No rpimeiro case gave positive 2,101 people (51%) and in the second the positives were 4,383 (2.5%). It also meant that men account for more than 80% of drug and alcohol offenses. Finally, he explained that while we are drug-positive at the most common age range between 35 and 44 years, we are alcohol-positive up to the range between 45 and 54 years.
Losada recalled that alcohol is behind a third of fatal accidents at the wheel. Consuming alcohol multiplies the chances of suffering an accident exponentially. “The only safe rate is 0.0%, because the drinker not only puts himself at risk, but others.” Therefore, added the subdelegate, “zero tolerance with those who drive drunk on a night of drinks, but also with those who drink alcohol at a business lunch or with friends and then take the car; everyone and everyone are equally irresponsible; there are no excuses.”
In the same campaign carried out between 11 and 17 December last year in Galicia, 28,799 drivers were controlled and 597 were punished, of which 373 were positive in alcohol and 224 in drugs. By provinces where more positives were detected was in A Coruña, with 235 positives, followed by Lugo, with 164, Pontevedra with 113 and Ourense with 85.
31 people killed so far this year in the province
Regarding the road mortality figures so far this year, Abel Losada stressed that 31 people have died (21 on interurban roads and another 10 on urban roads). The deputy delegate added that the number of fatalities is, right now, in figures similar to those of recent years.
By ownership of the roads, the autonomous ones remain the most dangerous, given that they accumulated 414 accidents with injuries and 13 deaths, well above the national roads where there were to date 320 accidents and 5 fatalities. In the provinces, there were 108 sinister victims and one deceased person.
