The deputy delegate of the Government in Ourense, Eladio Santos, accompanied by the deputy mayor of Monforte de Lemos, Gloria Mª Prada, and the head of the Maintenance area of ADIF in Ourense, Luis Palacios, participated this morning in the inaugural train journey of the Ourense–Monforte section, after the completion of the improvement works that forced travelers to travel for two years by bus between the two cities.
It was a complete reform of this first stretch, with a distance of 46 km and complex orography. “An integral renovation of the platform, sleepers, track, catenary, lighting, signage, tunnel gauge and viaducts was carried out, as well as the improvement in digitalization and connection with traffic control centers,” explained Eladio Santos. “It is an important investment in a road that dates back to the 19th century and that needed a strong economic commitment, as this Government did, thus guaranteeing security, also eliminating level crossings, and the sustainability of this communication resource, which will also favor the transport of goods,” he added.
To this day, work continues on the route linking Monforte and Lugo, “within the scheduled deadlines,” clarified the subdelegate. Those who, at the end, will facilitate the Portuguese capital’s connection with high speed through Ourense.
For the total realization of the works between the two provincial capitals, the Government allocated 650 M€, being approximately 95% executed or in execution, and including the renovation of the Intermodal Station of Ourense and improvements in the Monforte station.
In addition, Santos stressed that this government project contributes to the interregional connection, “very important in terms of the union by rail with the area of Bierzo, León and Valdeorras. And it will be accompanied by an improvement and greater frequency of communications between León and Galicia”, he said.
