The deputy delegate of the Government in A Coruña, María Rivas, traveled this morning to the city of Ortigueira, where accompanied by the mayor Pablo Diego Moreda, visited the public library “López Corton” to commemorate Library Day and the IES Punta Candieira to attend the workshops of “Regueifando en Equality”.
The subdelegate stressed the fundamental role that libraries (public, school, university, specialized ...) have in the search for the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda, since they contribute to the achievement of quality education, gender equality, the consolidation of democratic institutions, the dissemination of truthful information, the reduction of poverty and the care of the environment...
Libraries also contribute to bridging the digital divide, provide access to new information technologies, and encourage and assist people of all ages and backgrounds in the acquisition of digital skills. They are meeting places for the exchange of opinions and knowledge, the implementation of new ideas and projects and are especially relevant in rural areas, with low population or areas in demographic decline.
Rivas indicated that these are some of the reasons why the subdelegation of the Government of A Coruña has chosen Cedeira for this commemoration; and that this year the Ministry of Culture has chosen to celebrate this day under the motto “For a sustainable future”.
The subdelegate recalled the Government’s commitment to culture, and especially to promoting reading through the María Moliner Reading Animation Campaign. A contest aimed at municipalities with less than 50,000 inhabitants, in which the best projects or activities of reading dynamization developed in their libraries are awarded, with the aim of promoting reading among all social groups, especially among children and youth; an action that is done in collaboration with the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces.
In the María Moliner Reading Animation Campaign, 370 projects are awarded, of which 360 receive a cash prize for an individual amount of 2,777.77 euros and the ten that obtain a higher score, receive a prize each of 10,000 euros. Thus, in the last call, 5 libraries were awarded in the province of A Coruña the municipal library of Ares, the library "Rego de la Balsa" of Carballo, the municipal library "Concepción Arenal" of Miño, the Central Rela library of Oleiros and the municipal library "Juan Fernández Latorre" of Ortigueira.
María Rivas also wanted to influence the involvement of municipal libraries in the activities promoted by the subdelegation of A Coruña in the fight against male violence, since it is a mandatory stop in each city that requests the Travelling Suitcase against Gender Violence – MAVI. This initiative works through reading on issues of feminism, violence against women, empowerment or self-esteem, novels etc. ; favoring critical thinking in the face of gender roles and stereotypes.
The deputy delegate of the Government and the mayor also approached the IES Punta Candieira to attend the workshops of “Regueifando en equality” an activity framed within the program developed by the subdelegation for November 25, International Day for the eradication of violence against women.
These workshops are a further demonstration of the Government’s commitment to the search for a more just and egalitarian society, free from male violence. This activity in favor of equality mixes the use of music and our language, in an expression of culture as traditional as regueifa. “A good mix to be used as a tool to raise awareness about equality and the fight against gender violence,” said the deputy delegate.
With this activity “we want to provide students with discursive tools through oral improvisation, so that they can face the different daily situations from gender equality, respect for diversity and the fight against gender violence, while promoting the conservation of a figure of the Galician oral tradition such as regueifa”.
This activity has already been carried out in the IES Fernando Blanco de Cee, with the participation of the students of the basic VET and 2nd ESO courses; in the IES Adormideras de A Coruña with 2nd ESO students, and today it is carried out in the IES Punta Candieira de Cedeira with the participation of the 4th and Basic VET students.
Thus, in the activity directed by the regueifeira and panderetera, Lupe Blanco will participate more than 150 students between 12 and 16 years of age from these three educational centers of the province.
