The Government’s deputy delegate in Lugo, Isabel Rodríguez, highlighted this morning on the occasion of the International Day of the Elderly the importance of ensuring active and healthy aging, highlighting the policies promoted by the Government in favor of this fundamental part of society. During the conference given by the trainer, organized by the City of Lugo through the area of Social Welfare and Senior Citizens, led by Olga López Racamonde, and in collaboration with the National Police, the subdelegate highlighted the measures adopted by the Government in recent years to improve the lives of elderly people.
One of the main points mentioned by the subdelegate in her speech was the 8.5% increase in pensions (3.8% in the last year) that benefited more than 114,000 elderly people in the province of Lugo, ensuring an improvement in their living conditions. In addition, he highlighted the strengthening of the dependency system, which experienced an increase of 152% since 2018, providing greater support to those who need assistance at this vital stage. “These policies are a sign of the commitment of the Government of Pedro Sánchez to the protection of the elderly,” he said.
In addition, he stressed the need not to see old age as a period of decline, but as a stage in which quality of life, safety and well-being must be promoted. Second, he said, "it is essential to encourage the active participation of older people in society, ensuring that they can enjoy healthy and full aging." The government works to ensure that older people have the resources and services they need to stay active and safe in their daily lives.
Institutional collaboration
In her speech, the subdelegate also highlighted the joint work between the institutions, such as the program of the National Police Master Plan, which provides training to older people to prevent situations of risk, such as scams or abuses. “These training talks, such as the one given on this occasion by Rubén Darío Vega, trainer of the National Police, are fundamental to reduce the vulnerability of older people in an increasingly complex environment.” The subdelegate praised the institutional collaboration in the protection and security of this group.
In her closing remarks, the subdelegate insisted that the Government will continue to work to improve the lives of older people, combating problems such as loneliness and ensuring dignified, active and protected ageing for all.
