The subdelegate of the Government Abel Losada announces an investment of 6.6 million euros to expand the 5G mobile coverage to the small municipalities of the province in Pontevedra, Abel Losada, said that the Government is going to invest 6.6 million euros in Pontevedra to bring the 5G mobile coverage to municipalities of less than 10,000 inhabitants. It did so after learning of the provisional resolution of this aid, framed in the UNICO Active Networks program of the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Service. This line of aid mobilizes 508 million euros throughout the country to bring the necessary infrastructure that provides 5G coverage to more than 1.8 million inhabitants of small municipalities, in addition to providing coverage to 30,000 kilometers of the road network.
“No case of Pontevedra, it will allow the 5G to be carried by 80 villas and villages that currently do not have 4G mobile coverage of at least 50 Mbps and it was not expected that this will arrive in the next three years, since they are not economically profitable areas for the private initiative,” said the deputy delegate. In total, 5G coverage will be given to 23,000 inhabitants and more than 407 kilometers of roads.
Abel Losada highlighted the Government’s effort to lead the technological modernization of communications and recalled that Spain leads the deployment of fiber optics in Europe, with the aim of ensuring that by the end of 2025 the entire national territory has a high-speed Internet connection, either by fiber or by satellite and that it will also be on that date when 5G coverage will be accessible to the entire population. “It is an unprecedented effort that must be valued, because sometimes the complaints of the few remaining sites, some of which will have to be covered by satellite, are heard more than the voices of the vast areas of the territory that already have fiber.”
The actions for the advancement of 5G, financed from the funds of the Government’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, were awarded in the province to the companies Orange and Telefónica.
This call is the largest investment in history launched in Spain to deploy technology. This program is a pioneer in Europe by allocating European funds to finance active equipment that extends the territorial deployment of 5G with full functionality in small municipalities.
