The subdelegate of the Government in Lugo, Isabel Rodríguez, took this morning to the city of Vilalba the campaign of the General Directorate of Traffic to raise awareness about vulnerable users on conventional roads. Together with the mayor, Marta Ronco, and the provincial head of Traffic, Alberto González, as well as local government councillors and members of the Traffic subsector of the Civil Guard, they made a distribution of 200 high-visibility reflective vests among the residents of the municipality.
Isabel Rodríguez recalled the need to “take self-protection measures to see and be seen, a claim with which we managed to close the year 2023 without counting a single death run, despite the fact that in this annuality one already occurred, which shows that we must continue to insist and raise awareness about road safety.”
Not reaching the campaign, on the one hand it aims to raise awareness among pawns, cyclists and motorcyclists about their own vulnerable position, reminding them of the need to make themselves visible with reflective elements and pieces, to use specific protection systems such as the helmet as well as the appropriate clothing for riding bicycles and motorcycles or to comply with and respect the rules that specifically affect them. On the other hand, it seeks to sensitize drivers about the high exposure to risk of these users and the need to maintain the level of constant alert to their presence on the road.
According to the subdelegate, “we must remember these drivers in need of reducing or moderating their speed when they encounter vulnerable road users, extreme caution when crossing and turning, look through the rear-view mirrors frequently, use the intermittent signs of signaling and respect the lateral distance of one and a half meters to advance a cyclist or pawn who is also using the road”.
This initiative follows the lines marked by the Road Safety Strategy 2021-2030 and by the Road Safety Plan of Galicia 2022-2025, which in both cases set as a specific objective the protection of this group.
