The government delegate in Galicia, Pedro Blanco, today highlighted the importance of promoting employment and strengthening public services through social innovation projects to curb the depopulation of rural areas. He explained this at the inauguration of the Day of Promotion of Employment to Repopulate Rural held in the city of A Fonsagrada within the project “Smart Territory” promoted by the Group of Rural Development Montes and Eastern Valleys and the Galician Federation of Municipalities and Provinces, which has the support of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge.
Accompanied by the president of the GDR and mayor of A Fonsagrada, Carlos López, and the president of the FEGAMP and mayor of Vilagarcía de Arousa, Alberto López, the delegate of the Government congratulated both entities “for creating spaces for reflection and listening to the experiences of different agents in the development of this project focused on the fight against depopulation, which has the support of a Government that grants for the first time direct aid to this end.” In this sense, he stressed the importance that “these initiatives of socioeconomic dynamization and territorial reactivation are being created from the territories themselves, since they are their main inhabitants affected by the decline of the population and first interested in working to provide solutions”.
Pedro Blanco said that “from the Government we know the reality of the province of Lugo, with a great territorial dispersion and an increasingly aging population, but we are clear that the response to this situation is through the joint action of the administrations, the commitment to the improvement of infrastructures and public services and the commitment of the societies with their territories.”
However, he explained that “reversing depopulation is not an easy task, but we all truly believe in the potentialities of the rural of the Lucense mountain, we will have a dignified, sustainable and better future, with more employment opportunities in the primary, agri-food, associative and public sector, improvements in social services and commitment to access to housing to facilitate the settlement of population in the rural”.
A government delegate concluded his speech by committing to “work in the search for a territorial rebalance that guarantees equal opportunities for all people, regardless of where they live”.
