The deputy delegate of the Government in Pontevedra, Abel Losada, co-chaired this morning the Xunta Local de Seguridad de Tomiño together with the mayor, Sandra González. The deputy delegate valued as a very positive development the incorporation of the city council to the Telephone Service for Attention and Protection of Women (ATENPRO), which is already serving and improving the safety of 206 women throughout the province of Pontevedra. Abel Losada explained that this teleassistance resource provided by the Ministry of Equality of the Government of Spain to victims of male violence is organized through an agreement signed with the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP). Therefore, the city of Tomiño must now apply for membership through this entity.
The service, which was originally created to protect victims of gender violence, was extended in 2023 to all victims of male violence, so that women who are victims of sexual violence, sexual exploitation, trafficking or any type of violence against women can also enjoy it 365 days a year and 24 hours a day. It is based on the provision of a mobile phone with the latest telelocalization technologies that allows you to contact at any time a center staffed by trained personnel to give an adequate response to each need. In the face of emergency situations, the centre’s staff is prepared to provide an adequate response and mobilize the necessary resources.
Abel Losada applauded the interest of the City of Tomiño to join the ATENPRO network and highlighted the success of this program, designed so that municipalities can offer tools to support women victims, since it is the staff of the municipal Social Services who decides the allocation of the mobile device to women, either by request or on their own initiative. The delivery of the device is done, in a discreet way, by the Red Cross as the managing entity of the program.
Finally, the Xunta Local de Seguridad valued the favorable evolution in the reduction of crime during the last year, with a decrease of 17.35% in the global statistics and decreases in practically all the criminal typologies. The decrease was 5% in the case of serious and less serious crimes, 28.5% in minor crimes and 35.5% in administrative offences. “It is very clear that Tomiño, on the other side of having a great quality of life, is a very safe city council and this, in addition to a subjective perception, is a statistical reality,” said the deputy delegate.
In this regard, the subdelegate indicated that the crime rate of Tomiño, an index that reflects the number of crimes committed per thousand inhabitants, is 24.79 per thousand, less than half of the national rate, which is 51.2 per thousand. “Being able to reduce the numbers taking into account this starting point is especially salient and the security forces and bodies that operate and work together in this municipality should be thanked.”
During the Xunta de Seguridad, the possibility of the City Council beginning to work on the elaboration of a constructive project of a new building that allows to group the post of the Civil Guard and the units of the Local Police, with the aim of being elevated to the Ministry of Interior was also assessed.
Finally, the mayor transferred the subdelegate to concern for road safety on the regional road PO-344 in the places of Figueiró and Barro, where the losses produced by a pipeline generated water supply from the Rubio Consortium are causing sinks in the road. The subdelegate undertook to transfer this concern for road safety on this road to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Mobility of the Xunta de Galicia to act within the scope of its competences, since it is a road belonging to the regional network.
