The government delegate in Galicia, Pedro Blanco, highlighted the response of the Government of Pedro Sánchez to a historical demand of the municipalities of Poio and Sanxenxo, through the investment of 26 million euros by the Ministry for Ecological Transition (MITECO) in the sanitation and purification actions that take place in these municipalities.
Pedro Blanco visited today the works of expansion of the treatment plant of Paxariñas (Sanxenxo) and of the underwater emissary of Montalvo together with the president of the state mercantile society Aguas de lanas Cuencas de España (Acuaes), Mª Rosa Cobo, the subdelegate of the Government in Pontevedra, Abel Losada, and the mayors of Poio and Sanxenxo, Ángel Molde, and Telmo Martín.
The government delegate highlighted the important advances in a project that considered “a before and an after for the Pontevedra estuary” and that framed the “environmental commitment of this government and its commitment to better management of wastewater”. He recalled that there was an urgent need to develop these infrastructures to protect the estuary and that “once again, with this government the projects go from paper to reality to make Galicia better”.
He explained that the Ministry for the Ecological Transition, through Acuaes, maintains a historical investment commitment in Galicia and particularly in the province of Pontevedra. In addition to the 26 million that are invested in Sanxenxo and Poio, the cleaning news of Ponteareas and Santiago is underway, the project for the purification of the Illa de Arousa advances and other historical projects such as that of Ribeira were completed. “We talk about 130 million euros destined to improve the management of our wastewater, a clear sign of the firm commitment of the Government of Pedro Sánchez to redirect one of the great pending subjects in Galicia as it is to improve the state of the quality of our waters,” he added.
On the other hand, Mª Rosa Cobo highlighted the 26 million investments as a "very relevant" amount from which 100,000 neighbors will benefit, counting on the floating population that arrives in summer to both municipal terms." At the same time, he highlighted the administrative collaboration that was "very positive" to be able to promote the project.
The works carried out consist of the expansion and improvement of the Paxariñas treatment plant, in addition to building new pumping and propulsion stations in Raxó and Areas and expanding different sections of the network of manifolds and impulsions that will allow these pumps to be connected with the new EDAR. Work will also be carried out on a new submarine emissary in Montalvo, 1,300 metres long, which will replace the existing one.
Since August 31, the date on which the replanting verification documents were signed, topographic survey work has been carried out, as well as the contracting and manufacturing of the pipes that make up the new collectors and the emissary. The laying of pipes in the collectors began in February, finishing the collector of Raxó, that of Areas and that of Avenida de León and the impulse of Raxó, and being in execution to impulse of Areas of which 50 percent of its length remains.
In relation to the works of the treatment plant, the expansion plot in which the decanters, the pretreatment building and the control building will be located was completely cleared, and the demolition of the primary decanters, thickeners and workshop was carried out. The excavation and execution of the decanters also began.
The works in the pumping of Areas will begin this month of April and those of the pumping of Raxó after the summer. According to the expected deadlines, the works will be completed in September 2025.
The action is completed with the execution of the underwater emissary of Montalvo, whose start of works of assembly of the pipeline in the sea and of the directed horizontal drilling of its initial section is scheduled to begin at the end of April, once the Council of Ministers approves soon the reservation of land maritime public domain necessary for that and the Port Authority of Marín authorizes the concession of occupation of port public domain. All the pipes and weights to be installed are manufactured and installed on site at the central access of the beach of Montalvo, waiting for the aforementioned permits.
It is planned that the works will be co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund ERDF, within the Plurirrexional Operational Program of Spain (POPE), according to the agreement signed on April 29, 2021 and the addendum signed on April 18, 2023 with the municipalities of Sanxenxo and Poio.
