The subdelegate of the Government in Pontevedra, Abel Losada, visited today the Parador de Baiona to know at first hand the reform works that the Ministry of Industry and Tourism will undertake in the building. “These works are long-awaited and will become a reality thanks to the commitment of the Government of Pedro Sánchez to tourism in Baiona and throughout Pontevedra,” he stressed.
The restoration works that TURESPAÑA has come to tender for an amount of 6,645,138.86 € are part of the TURESPAÑA and Paradores Investment Plan, which provides for the performance of 39 Paradores located in buildings or environments declared as Ben of Cultural Interest (BIC). Likewise, this Investment Plan also includes the drafting of conservation master plans for 53 paradores considered BIC, among which is Baiona. The amount of both investments, which are carried out under the umbrella of the Government’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, reaches 7,044,442 euros.
As the deputy delegate explained, these works for the conservation and enhancement of the monumental complex of the Parador will allow to restore and improve the chapel, the roof and the vaults of the reception as well as to value the wall and the promenade of the Ronda and, more specifically, its access arches, the door of Felipe IV, the towers of the Tenaza, the access to the area of the well and the environment of the House of Pedro Madruga, as well as the integral lighting of the two kilometers of walled enclosure. The tendering period for these important actions in the hotel infrastructure will close on April 2 and their award is scheduled for the end of the summer. They will have a maximum execution time of 15 months.
Likewise, the Ministry reserves 399,303.82 € for the drafting of the master plan of the Parador de Baiona. The elaboration of this technical document will allow us to better know the building and analyze its current uses in order to draw the future road map for its conservation. The investment is part of a bidding process that also includes the elaboration of two more master plans in the province, those of the Parador de Pontevedra and Cambados. “In total, the Government will allocate more 618 thousand euros so that three paradores of the province have a technical document to guide their future actions,” explained Losada. All master plans must be completed by June 2026.
The deputy delegate recalled that the investment committed by the Government since 2018 for the improvement of tourism in Baiona reaches almost 10 million euros. In this regard, he recalled the more than 331 thousand euros that the Government invested already in the renovation works and installation of exterior lighting of the Parador and the 2 million euros received by the municipality for the development of its Tourism Sustainability Plan.
The subdelegate stressed the importance of these works, “very demanded and fundamental because they represent a substantial improvement in the conditions of a key accommodation in one of the most touristic municipalities of Galicia, which will allow to continue attracting tourism, employment and economic activity to Baiona and the province”. Likewise, Losada highlighted the Government’s commitment to advance #cara a sustainable and higher quality tourism model. “It is an unprecedented effort through which the future of Galician tourism is designed, with the objective of making our land a sustainable, competitive and first level destination,” he added.
A little bit of history
The Parador de Baiona is located in the old fortified villa founded in 1497 by the Catholic Reis and is qualified as Ben of Cultural Interest. The ruins of the property were bought in the 19th century by the Marquis of the Pazo de la Merced, who built a neo-Gothic palace, declared a National Monument in 1950. Between 1963 and 1966 it was reformed to house the current parador.
