Carballeda de Avia (Ourense), March 4, 2024. The subdelegate of the Government in Ourense, Emilio González, highlighted the 6 projects presented by small municipalities, social entities and small businesses of Ourense that will benefit from the aid for the transformation and territorial fight against depopulation launched by the Ministry for Ecological Transformation and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) with an investment of more than 1.2 million euros for the province. Emilio González explained that “these investments will help to improve and revitalize the economy and the demographic situation of the areas facing the demographic challenge.” He expressed this during his participation in the presentation of the academic projects carried out in the model town of Muimenta by the students of 5th of the Technical School of Architecture of the University of Navarra (ETSAUN-UNAV).
Projects of the demographic challenge in Carballeda de Avia: 55,500€ for housing rehabilitation, tourism promotion and development of the vegetable garden and the communal dining room of Muimenta
The deputy of the Government went this morning to the municipality of Carballeda de Avia to get to know first-hand one of the projects selected by the Ministry and "thank you for the work carried out by the municipalities to carry out programs that reverse the consequences of the demographic challenge and attract investments, tourism and population to boost their activity". The subdelegate was interested in the initiatives promoted by the local government that is presided over by Mayor Luis Milia. These initiatives have as their framework the program "community gardens and kitchens of the town of Muimenta" which will receive more than 25,000 euros to promote the project of cohousing and attraction of economic development of the model town granted in 2023.
Emilio González recalled that these investments add to the more than 20,000 euros that the Government invested in 2022 to promote the rehabilitation of the town’s homes and the promotion of tourism.
The fight against depopulation, one of the pillars of government
The subdelegate recalled that this category of councils of the "demographic challenge" was established by the Government of Pedro Sánchez to designate and support the municipalities of less than 5,000 inhabitants that require a plan to stop the depopulation and abandonment of the rural environment and affirmed that "The work carried out by the administrations of these municipalities is fundamental so that they can move forward and build more lively and dynamic municipalities, stopping the depopulation of rural areas and betting on the sustainability and expansion of services, making life there more attractive and promoting advances that put the people who inhabit it in the center."
The subdelegate expressed his satisfaction with the projects that are in the same line as the Government’s policies in the field of Demographic Challenge and showed that this aid is another sign of the Government’s determined commitment, which favors communication between administrations to achieve, among all, a Galicia territory integrated and adapted to the new forms of work and opportunities that have been effective in the face of the depopulation suffered by these territories.
