The Government Delegation in Galicia reports that the campaign of intensive surveillance of vans carried out by the General Directorate of Traffic during the week of November 20-26, 17,492 vehicles were controlled and 1,606 complaints were filed in the Community. This campaign was developed due to the ‘Black Friday’ and the increase in traffic of this type of transport.
Among the main infractions are the excess of speed (661 complaints), not having passed to I.T.V. (251 complaints) and driving with tires in poor condition (112 complaints). It also highlights that 96 drivers were sanctioned for alcohol and drug use.
According to data from the General Directorate of Traffic, the celebration of ‘Black Friday’ reached 4.6 million daily shipments of goods in Spain and, the vast majority, in this type of vehicle. With the aim of checking different aspects related to the road safety of vans, the campaign established checkpoints on all types of roads, especially on conventional roads, as well as in areas close to industrial estates, loading and unloading areas, shopping centers, etc.
The DGT warns that in 2022, both the sinister traffic with victims in which the vans were involved (7% more) and the people who died in them (30% more) increased, with respect to the previous year. There was also a 20% increase in the number of drivers reported for speeding, which remains the most committed offense, with more than 302,000 complaints. In Galicia, according to this week in the Autonomous Commission of Road Safety, three drivers of vans died in 2022 on the roads and two of them did not make regulatory use of the safety belt.
