The government delegate in Galicia, Pedro Blanco, announced in Xermade a new investment of 19.4 million euros from the government to complete the extension of high-speed Internet to all corners of Galicia. This is the third edition of the UNICO Broadband Program of the Ministry of Digital Transformation, which adds a global investment of 90 million euros in the community to bring broadband connection to 236,254 homes and companies that until now did not have this service before the end of 2025.
In the province of Lugo, the company Avatel will be in charge of bringing high-speed Internet to 11,132 homes and companies within the framework of this third call, which is financed by the Government with 4,268,715 euros.
Pedro Blanco recalled that the Internet “is a tool that today is in every aspect of our lives, which is key to the development of the municipalities of the 21st century and also to the dynamization of economic activity in rural areas”. In this sense, he stressed that “we are the government that brought investments to solve a real problem after years without progress in this matter on the part of the regional administration.”
The delegate pointed out that initiatives such as the UNICO Program, which is financed from the funds of the Recovery Plan, “are another example of government money reaching each and every one of the Galician concellos. And they do it to improve the lives of their neighbors, as in the case of Xermade, where more than 2,000 neighbors who lacked high-speed Internet are now going to have this service.” In particular, the three calls will allow to bring high-speed Internet through fiber to 2,077 families and companies of the municipality through 484 projects executed by the selected companies.
Provincial share
As detailed by Pedro Blanco, the government’s investment in the two previous calls, already in execution, was 71.2 million euros. In the first, Telefónica was the awarding company, while in the second the Galician Viento Red is responsible for the deployment in A Coruña; Avatel in Pontevedra and Ourense, and Adamo in Lugo.
In this third call Viento Red was awarded the provinces of A Coruña and Pontevedra, while Avatel was selected to execute the connections in the provinces of Lugo and Ourense. The total investment that will be mobilized, adding the contribution of companies to government aid, amounts to 131 million euros in the three calls for proposals.
Government investments in Xermade
The delegate and the mayor of Xermade, Roberto García, reviewed the support of the Government to the Concello de Xermade in recent years, among which stand out the 4,000 euros for the implementation of a Classroom Mentor or or the 403,000 euros of the Fair Transition funds of the Ministry of Ecological Transition for the rehabilitation of the old rectoral house to turn it into the future International Center of the Tornaria of the municipality, which hosts the International Meeting of Wood Torneiros.
“They are measures that help to energize regions and combat the depopulation of our rural, because from the Government we want to guarantee the equality of living rights where you live, and that people who live in municipalities such as Xermade have the best infrastructures, equipment and public services,” he concluded.
