The government delegate in Galicia, Pedro Blanco, highlighted the new impulse of the Government of Pedro Sánchez to complete the ultra-fast digital connectivity of the Galician territory with the third call of the UNICO-Broadband program, which will bring the internet connection through optical fiber to 9,429 families and companies in rural and remote areas of the community. Pedro Blanco today highlighted the third call, already open, for the program managed by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, through the Secretary of State for Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructures. This line, which was already published in the Official State Gazette, reserves for Galicia a total of 19.7 million euros that will be used to finance the connection projects necessary to achieve the proposed connectivity objective.
The government delegate highlighted the UNICO-Broadband program that, among the lines of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, is what has the most impact on the territory and the citizenship because it benefits all the municipalities of Galicia by bringing an essential service to its population such as the ultra-fast coverage of internet access. In addition, he recalled that it is a strategic element of the demographic challenge policies as one of the central axes of action of the Government.
Pedro Blanco pointed out that the call for 2023 gives continuity to the launches in 2021 and 2022, which are already in execution. The order determines, by province, the areas that must have this connection and the budget available for link.
| Province | Investment in millions of euros | Households and companies |
| A Coruña | 4,635 | 2.206 |
| Lugo | 4,608 | 2,319 |
| Ourense | 2,862 | 1.283 |
| Pontevedra | 7,686 | 3.621 |
By province, in A Coruña the UNICO-Broadband program will connect 54,685 households and companies with a government investment of 21.4 million euros. In Lugo, the fiber will be extended to 80,503 households and companies with 27.1 million euros. In Ourense, 57,056 households and companies will benefit, for which the Government will approach 23.6 million euros. Finally, in the province of Pontevedra this technology will be provided to 43,910 households and companies, with a state investment of 18.8 million euros.
Third call
The third call for applications for the UNICO-Broadband program was opened last Monday and will remain open until September 15. Until that date, telecommunications companies will be able to submit their proposals.
In Galicia, the government subsidizes 80% of the cost of the projects, which are an example of public-private collaboration, since the companies bring the remaining to the full cost of these actions. Projects must be completed by 31 December 2025.
