A Cañiza, March 6, 2023.- The subdelegate of the Government in Pontevedra, Maica Larriba, presented today in the City of A Cañiza the awareness project "MAVI: the travelling suitcase against gender violence", an initiative promoted by the Unit against Violence on Women of the Subdelegation. The event was also attended by the mayor of the municipality, Luis Antonio Gómez Piña; the councilor for Finance, Urbanism and Mobility, Paula Bacelar; the social services team of the town; and the head of the Unit against Violence against Women in the province of Pontevedra, Manuela Vilaboy.
The subdelegate insisted on the responsibility that public institutions must assume in raising awareness and, above all, in offering safe places of denunciation and attention to the victims of this violence “since the 1,397 cases of gender violence active in the province in the VioGen System are intolerable and show the magnitude of a reality that we cannot ignore, despite the fact that many insist on denying it.”
The project “MAVI: The Travelling Suitcase against Gender-Based Violence” was created with the aim of promoting awareness and prevention of such violence. The project aims to bring books on different topics related to feminism, equality, empowerment, self-esteem and male violence to women and girls in the province. With four active travel bags, one of them now reclaims in the Cañiza in its resort for the province of Pontevedra. The others have already stopped at the municipalities of A Lama, Moaña, Covelo, A Guarda, O Grove and Mondariz. MAVI contains texts that promote reflection, awareness and awareness on key issues to achieve a more egalitarian and violence-free society, favoring critical thinking against the stereotypes and gender roles that perpetuate these violence and inequalities.
Maica Larriba pointed out the importance of education in the fight against male violence and for gender equality and stressed that “there is still much to be done”. Likewise, Larriba called on all women “to take a step forward so that the system can help and protect them” and extended the call to the environments to denounce and thus “protect the rights of life of these women and their children”.
The mayor of the town, Luis Antonio Gómez Piña, stressed the importance of “inter-administrative cooperation to deal with this scourge” and thanked the deputy delegate of the Government for her presence in the town “in a week as significant as that of 8M in which it respects the fight for equality and the rights of women”. The MAVI project will remain in the “Equality Corner” of the Municipal Library of A Cañiza for three months, during which it will also visit one of the educational centers of the municipality.
