The Secretary of State for Tourism, Rosana Morillo, and the delegate of the Government in Galicia, José Miñones, today highlighted the extraordinary impulse of the Government of Pedro Sánchez to the modernization and transformation of tourism in Galicia with 200 million euros of investment from 2020 and until this year 2023. Both have been in Santiago de Compostela, where they have supervised several of the actions financed by the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism in the city that aim to improve tourism management and the heritage of tourist use.
Since 2020, the Government has promoted the Destination Tourism Sustainability Plans, a tool to advance in the configuration of more sustainable, green and digital tourist destinations and move towards the seasonalization of demand. Since then, the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism has promoted 34 Sustainability Plans and cohesion actions between destinations in Galicia with an investment of 85.7 million euros. Rosana Morillo has pointed out that these plans are already benefiting one of every two Galician municipalities, in an “unprecedented” investment that adds the ordinary and extraordinary calls, which are framed in the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan of the Government.
The Secretary of State for Tourism recalled that the third extraordinary call for Tourist Sustainability Plans in Destination is already underway. Rosana Morillo has advanced that this call reserves for Galicia 21 million euros that she hopes will be exhausted, increasing the list of Galician destinations that are moving towards its sustainability.
Patrimonial rehabilitation
In addition to tourism sustainability plans, the Government ' s second course of action in this area focuses on the rehabilitation of the historical heritage of public ownership and its valuation for tourist use. In this line, the Government has allocated to Galicia about 50 million euros that are divided into three large lines. The first, aimed at restoring heritage located in the different Caminos de Santiago, with 22.7 million euros for 12 projects benefiting 17 municipalities where the Xacobe routes run. The second is intended for World Heritage cities, which will leave 3 million euros in Santiago de Compostela.
These lines are joined by the rehabilitation program of the BICs where the Paradores de Turismo are located. A program that in Galicia benefits six establishments of this chain in which 23.5 million euros will be invested in different patrimonial improvement and energy efficiency actions.
The Secretary of State for Tourism has announced that the Ministry will soon open a call for aid aimed at the rehabilitation of historical heritage for tourist use. The bases that will govern this line of aid have already been published, which will make 208 million euros available to administrations from the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.
Projects in Santiago
Accompanied by the mayor of Santiago, Xosé Sánchez Bugallo, and the deputy delegate of the Government in A Coruña, María Rivas, the Secretary of State and the delegate of the Government have visited the Hostal dos Reis Católica and the Pazo de Raxoi. Rosana Morillo has placed the Plaza del Obradoiro as a symbol of the government’s commitment to Galician tourism, with 20 million euros to transform three of its emblematic buildings: the Cathedral, the Parador and the Pazo de Raxoi.
In the hostal dos Reis Católica, the Secretary of State and the government delegate have visited several of the points that are going to be rehabilitated under the program for reform of BIC linked to Paradores de Turismo. In particular, the Hostal dos Reis Católica will receive 13.5 million euros with which it will deal with conservation actions of the south and east facades, the Renaissance courtyards and cloisters and the historical eaves. Also planned are actions linked to the monumental lighting of the exterior of the building and the four courtyards, as well as the conservation of the Royal Chapel.
Later, both went to the Pazo de Raxoi, where, accompanied by the mayor and the deputy delegate, they met the interior of this building, which is going to be the subject of an intense remodeling with 3 million euros of the program of the Ministry of Industry for World Heritage Cities.
At the headquarters of the Concello, they were also able to know the state of development of the Tourist Sustainability Plan in Destino de Santiago de Compostela, which cofinances the Ministry of Industry with one million euros.
