The Government Delegation in Galicia has activated in its Alert phase the Winter Road Plan in the State Road Network of the four Galician provinces. This measure is adopted before the predictions issued by the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) and will be updated depending on the meteorological parts issued by AEMET in the coming days.
Specifically, according to weather forecasts, snow accumulations greater than 20 centimeters are expected in the mountains of Lugo and Ourense in less than 24 hours. Snow accumulations of more than 4 centimeters above 500 meters are also expected in the interior of A Coruña and Pontevedra, and provinces of Lugo and Ourense.
The Government Delegation in Galicia, in accordance with the Coordination Protocol of Actions, will mobilize all available resources in Galicia to neutralize the effects caused by cold and snow on the roads. To this end, it has notified the agencies involved in road and traffic matters of the State (Road Demarcation, Civil Guard and Northwest Traffic Management Center), as well as the other administrations. The fundamental objective of the activation is to guarantee the maximum possible fluidity of traffic while maintaining the transport infrastructures of state competence in conditions of use.
Among the resources available, the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda has operational 103 snow removal machines, 21,000 tons of salt stored and 3,257,000 liters in brine tanks.
Recommendation
The Government Delegation recalls that the general protective measures to be adopted in the face of a snowy and cold storm are:
If you are going to travel
Request prior information on the state of the roads and the meteorological situation.
Avoid travelling by car whenever it is not necessary and use, if possible, public transport.
If it is essential to use the vehicle, check tyres, antifreeze and brakes. In addition, you have to be careful to fill the tank with gasoline, and carry chains and shelter elements.
Also, it is advisable to carry a mobile phone and power device from it.
Go very attentive to take special care with the ice plates. It is difficult to determine where in the path they may have been formed, although generally the umbrella zones are the most common.
If caught in the snow
You must stay in the car, if the storm surprises you inside it.
It is also advisable to keep the engine of the vehicle running and the heating on, taking care to renew the air from time to time. It is very important to avoid falling asleep.
Check that the exhaust pipe outlet is kept free at all times so that the smoke does not penetrate the car.
If possible, try to tune in to the radio stations, which will surely inform you of the weather forecasts, the official information on the state of the situation and the indications given about it.
