The Directorate General of Traffic begins today, October 7 and until next 13, a new Control and Surveillance Campaign on Distractions at the Wheel. The Civil Guard Traffic Group equipped with portable means will reinforce controls on the most dangerous stretches of conventional roads through speed control actions, alcohol and drug testing.
Distraction appears as a concurrent factor in 31% of fatal accidents, mainly due to the misuse of mobile phones, GPS navigators, or other devices. For example, the use of the mobile phone is a factor that multiplies by four the risk of suffering an accident.
Last campaign in Extremadura
In the last control and surveillance campaign on distractions at the wheel held from 9 to 15 October 2023 in Extremadura, a total of 270 checks were made on vehicles (131 in the province of Badajoz and 139 in the province of Cáceres), of which 131 were reported (63 in the province of Badajoz and 68 in the province of Cáceres).
The biggest cause of the complaints was the use of the mobile phone with a total of 38 sanctions, followed by wearing a belt while driving or the use of headphones, among others.
