The government delegate in Extremadura, José Luis Quintana, attended today the inauguration of the 39th edition of the Sheep Salon of La Serena, where he highlighted the commitment shown by the Government of Spain in favor of the livestock sector.
Quintana has pointed out that this commitment translates into the will to accompany the livestock sector in its transition to a modern, sustainable and responsible production model.
In this regard, the government delegate recalled that the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food has been working on the development of initiatives and policies that contribute to the Spanish livestock sector being up to the 21st century and the best European standards. Policies that have been complemented with specific actions at difficult times for livestock professionals and entrepreneurs.
“In the case of Extremadura alone, almost 12,000 farmers in this autonomous community have received 107 million euros in urgent measures in response to the worsening conditions in the primary sector resulting from the war and climate conditions. In other words, farmers in Extremadura have received 30% of the total national aid granted for this reason,” he said.
Quintana has also pointed out that, in communities such as Extremadura, we must go further and highlight the enormous environmental, social and economic importance that extensive livestock farming plays in large areas of the territory, where on many occasions it is the only economic activity that is carried out, thus contributing to the fixation of the population in the territory.
The government delegate recalled that this event is the only monographic contest dedicated exclusively to sheep in Spain, which has highlighted the fact that it has become the epicentre of sheep farming, attracting experts, farmers and foodies.
The Salon Ovino de La Serena stands out again for its rich offer of activities and events, including the National Auction of Selected Cattle of the Merina Breed, an event that seeks to improve the genetic quality of local farms.
Finally, Quintana has thanked the work done by the Salon Ovino de la Serena Fair Institution and the School of Pastors of Extremadura, Caja Rural de Extremadura and the collaboration of those agencies, including the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Sustainable Development of the Junta de Extremadura, the Diputación de Badajoz, the City of Castuera, which allow its organization.
