The delegate of the Government in the Valencian Community, Pilar Bernabé, presided over the presentation of the distinctions of the General Secretariat of Penitentiary Institutions on the occasion of the celebration of the Day of Mercy in the Social Insertion Center of Valencia Torre Espioca and in the Penitentiary Center of Valencia, Antoni Asunción.
In this act has been recognized “the work of public servants in favor of a penitentiary system such as Spanish that is valued and recognized outside our borders,” said Bernabé. The Spanish penitentiary system “is one of the most effective in the European Union, as evidenced by the recidivism rate: 80% of people who leave prison do not commit crimes again,” he said.
“This recognition would not be possible without the indispensable task that, as servants and public servants, all the people who make up the prison staff carry out,” said Bernabé.
The Government, he added, “is aware that in order to guarantee optimal security conditions for the prison population and for workers, it is necessary to have adequate resources and infrastructures.” In addition, the Bill amending article 80 of Organic Law 1/1979, of September 26, to recognize prison personnel as agents of the authority has been promoted, “an aspect that the prison collective has been claiming for years and that this Government is committed to compliance,” he said.
