Transportes awards for 496,100 euros the feasibility study to improve the railway connection between León and Ponferrada

The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has awarded 496,100.00 euros (VAT included) to draft the feasibility study for improving the performance of the railway connection between León and Ponferrada, of the Northwest Atlantic corridor. The awarding company is the company WSP SPAIN-APIA, SAU, which will have an execution period of 18 months.
The scope of the study will allow us to determine if there are viable alternatives, and if necessary, the degree of action on the section under study, in order to solve the current problem, mainly in the so-called Manzanal Loop.
The main objectives are the improvement of the performance of the passenger and freight transport service, the improvement of the capacity and guarantee of the railway service, as well as the homogenization of the travel speeds.
The study comprises three phases. The first includes a preliminary study and analysis of the current situation, followed by a preliminary elaboration of proposals and preliminary feasibility analyses of alternatives. The second phase includes the elaboration of more detailed analyses of the alternatives proposed in the first phase, of a technical, environmental and socio-economic feasibility. Finally, for the third phase, the elaboration of a comparative analysis of the different alternatives and conclusions is included.
