The Ministry of Defense contributes to the preservation of the Zamorano Leonesa Asnal Race
24th Monographic Exhibition of the Asnal Zamorano Leonesa Race in San Vitero
March 16, 2024.- The Subdelegate of the Government, Ángel Blanco, participates this Saturday in the inauguration of the 24th edition of the Monographic Exhibition on the Asnal Zamorano Leonesa Race in the Fairgrounds of the town of San Vitero.
The Government of Spain, through the Ministry of Defense, supports the celebration of this traditional event dedicated to ensuring the conservation, improvement and promotion of the Zamorano-Leonese donkey.
Ángel Blanco highlights the important work of the Ministry of Defense in the preservation of this species. Specifically, thanks to the activity of the Military Center of Horse Breeding of Ávila, which participates in this event and has the support of the Subdelegation of Defense in Zamora.
The Cavalry Breeding Unit contributes to the continuity of the breed through an agreement with the Spanish Association of Selective Livestock Breeders of the Zamorano-Leonese Breed (ASZAL), which is made up of farmers located 80% in the province of Zamora.
This unit was created with the denomination of 6th Stallion Horse Depot by Real Orden of March 22, 1905 and initially had its location in Alcalá de Henares (Madrid). Since 1993 the center is located in Ávila, in the farm “El Pradillo”.
The Asnal Zamorano Leonesa Race originates in the west of the province of Zamora. According to the information collected by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, it comes from the common trunk to other European asses Equus asinus europeus, specifically those that are spread throughout the regions of southern Europe, mainly the Mediterranean basin and including asnals from half of northern Spain.
Its current geographical distribution corresponds mainly to the western and central regions of the province of Zamora, such as Aliste, Tierra de Alba and Tierra del Pan. Its representation in other provinces of Castilla y León is scarce, given mainly in León.
