Renfe transported in Castilla y León in 2023 more than 6.7 million Public Service travelers, 82% more
Annual balance
February 28, 2024.- Renfe reached the figure of 6.73 million passengers on Public Service trains in Castilla y León during the financial year 2023, a figure that represents an increase of more than 82% compared to the year 2022, according to provisional year-end data.
The public services that Renfe provides in the region include Medium Distance, Kilometre-Wide Commuter and Avant trains, as well as the new Public Service Obligation (PSO) relations provided on the high-speed network, for which recurring travelers can travel with Avant subscriptions.
In total, 3.5 million customers last year used the services of the Avant de Castilla y León corridors, including the new OSP relationships on high-speed network routes. This figure represents an increase of 78% compared to the data of 2022.
It should be noted that in 2023 the Avant Alicante-Segovia-Madrid service was the most demanded of all those provided by Renfe as a medium distance high-speed nationwide, with more than 2.7 million passengers, an increase of 47% compared to last year.
In addition, more than 3 million travelers correspond to the services of Conventional Medium Distance, which represents an increase of 91% with respect to the data of 2022. The Leon-Guardo Wide Metric Vicinity line also experienced a growth of 35%, rounding the 150,000 users.
Free subscriptions
This upward trend in the number of users indicates the confidence in the train as a means of public transport in Castilla y León, coinciding with the implementation of free subscriptions for travelers in Cerca and Media Distancia since September 2022, and of the 50% bonus Avant, to which the Junta de Castilla y León adds another 25% discount for people registered in the region.
The transport of these 6.7 million passengers on Renfe trains has prevented the emission of 1,036 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere, which would be equivalent to the consumption of almost 443,000 liters of gasoline if this transport had been carried out by road and the circulation of 4.5 million private vehicles.
