January 4, 2024.- The Government delegate in Castilla y León, Nicanor Sen, has authorized the activation of the Alert phase of the Protocol of coordination of actions in extreme weather situations that may affect the State Road Network in Castilla y León once received the warnings of the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET). The alert for precipitation in the form of snow will be activated at 6 a.m. this Friday and will be extended during the day of Saturday, waiting for the evolution of the front that will pass through the Community.
It will affect from 6 a.m. to the Cantabrian Mountain Range of León, where accumulations in 24 hours of up to 10 centimeters are expected. From 12:00 hours, the alert phase is activated in the Bay of Burgos and Palencia, where accumulations in 24 hours of up to 8 centimeters are expected.
Likewise, from 12 noon the alert phase is activated in the Iberian provinces of Burgos and Soria as well as in the Central System of Segovia, where accumulations of up to five centimeters are expected in 24 hours.
Forecasts from the State Meteorological Agency state that tomorrow’s snow level will be between 1,100 meters in the northwest and 1,400 in the southeast, falling to 900 or 1,000 meters while on Saturday it will range between 700 and 1,000 meters.
The government delegate in Castilla y León, Nicanor Sen, has activated this alert in accordance with the protocol of actions in extreme weather situations, which regulates the actions of the agencies of the General Administration of the State (Traffic, Roads, Civil Protection, Aemet), with the aim of ensuring road safety on state-owned roads, and, where appropriate, providing adequate assistance to vehicle occupants.
The Winter Road Plan 2023-2024 for Castilla y León has a wide range of human and mechanical means to deal with snow and other extreme weather phenomena that may affect the Road Network of the State of Castilla y León.
Specifically, 451 snow removal machines are available as well as the capacity to store 88,000 tons of solid salt in 265 tanks and silos distributed in strategic points of the network. Likewise, 74 plants are available to manufacture this mixture of salt and water, the brine, which prevents the formation of ice plates, and 72 tanks with capacity to store 5.3 million liters of that product.
More than 5,600 kilometers of state-owned roads run through Castilla y León, of which 2,400 are motorways and highways and 3,200 are conventional roads. More than 3,000 professionals, coming from different departments and with diverse functions, will work on the correct development of the Plan when the conditions require it.
The Government Delegation recommends that drivers exercise extreme caution at the wheel and inform themselves of the weather conditions on official channels before embarking on a trip. Likewise, if you are going to make excursions to the mountains, it is advisable to inform yourself of the weather forecast of the area to which you plan to go, and know the location of the shelters or cabins where to be protected in case of sudden drop in temperatures, storms or other adverse weather conditions.

Inform yourself of the weather situation and the state of the roads, extreme the precautions, review the vehicle and attend the traffic recommendations.
Check the tires, antifreeze and brakes. In addition, you should be careful to fill the fuel tank and carry winter tires or chains.
If it is imperative to travel by road, you should be very attentive and take special care with the ice plates.
It is useful to bring warm clothes and a mobile phone with spare battery and/or car charger.
