Renfe has transported almost 15,000 passengers in the first week of High Speed between Asturias and Madrid

December 7, 2023.- In the first week of the launch of Renfe’s High Speed (AV) commercial trips between Asturias and Madrid, which covers from November 30 to December 6, the extraordinary reception translates into the 14,887 customers who have already traveled, and who bought their ticket from November 2, when Renfe started the offer of places for AV services in Asturias. Since this date, the company has sold more than 80,000 tickets to travel until February 15.
The ‘Superprices’ campaign was in force between November 2 and 11, with 25,000 tickets available from 18 euros to travel between November 30, 2023 and February 15, 2024.
On November 30, the start date of commercial trips after the inauguration of the Variant of Pajares, more than 2,200 travelers used the new services, with four trains in each direction.
Two-phase implementation
Renfe’s commercial exploitation of the new High Speed infrastructure will take place in two phases. In this first phase, which began on November 30, travelers with origin in Madrid, Segovia, Valladolid, Palencia or León, and those who arrive or leave Asturias, already enjoy the reduction of travel times, new frequencies and better prices.
The substantial reduction of at least one hour in the route of all trains translates into a time of 3h12’ to save the journey between Madrid and Oviedo. Between Madrid and Pola de Lena, the new gateway to and from Asturias through the Pajares Variant, the travel time is 2h49’.

In a second phase, depending on the incorporation into service of the new trains of the 106 series, whose delivery by Talgo is scheduled for the first quarter of 2024, travel times and speeds will continue to improve. The implementation of these new trains will mean an increase in the number of connections and seats, benefits that AVE and Avlo trains will bring, as well as incorporating Avilés as a new destination for Alvia trains. In this second phase of exploitation, Renfe will launch new ‘Superprices’ campaigns.
