AWARENESS-RAISING WORK IN COVALENT
After the meeting, the regional jury of the Meninas 2023 Awards visited the town of Covalent, where they met with their mayor, José Llorente Alonso, the multiple initiatives that the City Council has developed in terms of awareness thanks to the contributions of the State Pact against Gender Violence.
In this sense, in 2019, 150 power banks (batteries for mobiles) were distributed serigraphed with a logo reading “Without a yes, it’s NO!” among the students of the IES Picos de Urbión, as well as the printed documentation of the initiative “There is a way out of Gender Violence” developed by the Government Delegation in Castilla y León.
A year later, in this town of Soriana, a motivational workshop for women was held with the title ‘Quiérete a ti yourself’, coaching and self-esteem, with the assistance of approximately 50 women. This activity was complemented with another one to promote reading with the motto of ‘Extraordinary Women’, in which books were acquired for the CEIP Manuela Peña.
During the year 2021, training workshops were held under the title ‘Social networks and gender violence’. It was aimed at the women of the municipality and students of 3rd and 4th ESO of the Picos de Urbión Institute.
In 2022 the City Council installed four banks with the name of four women relevant to the story and a QR code that redirected to a web page with the story of the protagonists. Through these codes, information was provided on the Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai; the most awarded gymnast of all time, Simone Biles; the writer, politician, lawyer and defender of women’s rights and promoter of women’s suffrage in Spain, Clara Campoamor; and the Spanish scientist Margarita Salas, the first Spanish woman to enter the National Academy of Sciences of the United States thanks to her research. From each of them there was the possibility to download relevant information.
Already during this year, the Consistorio pinariego has transformed a very visible and well-located public space into a small park frequented by elderly people. There were purple colored benches, a table, paper basket and gardeners, as well as a plaque with the slogan ‘Equality for women is progress for all’.
