October 19, 2023.- The Civil Guard and the Ertzaintza, supported by technicians of the Nuclear Security Council and coordinated from the Civil Protection Unit of the Government Subdelegation in Burgos, participated this morning in the exercise of activating the access controls of the Burgos Nuclear Emergency Plan (PENBU) in three strategic points of the road network. The exercise was also attended by the Government’s deputy delegate in Burgos, Pedro de la Fuente, as director of PENBU, and was held from 10.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. Subsequently, an evaluation meeting was held at the City Council of the Tobalina Valley.
This activity is part of the training of the staff of the Citizen Security and Public Order Group, the Radiological Group and the Coordination and Technical Assistance Group of the Emergency Plan of the Santa María de Garoña Nuclear Power Plant (PENBU).
The subdelegate of the Government in Burgos, Pedro de la Fuente Fernández, has highlighted the high degree of cooperation between all the agencies that have participated in this exercise and underlines the need to keep all the mechanisms of the emergency plan engaged.
During the exercise, informative checks have been carried out for the drivers of the vehicles that transited through the access roads to the Tobalina Valley within a radius of about 10 kilometers around Santa María de Garoña. The objective of this type of simulation is to maintain the effectiveness of the plan through the implementation of pollution control procedures, warning to the population and coordination of radiological surveillance and citizen security actions.
