The operators receive 107 million in aid for the extension of the optical fiber in Castilla y León from the program Unico 5G Redes
The Secretary of State for Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructures has published the provisional resolution of the call for aid to accelerate the deployment of this technology in rural areas
June 18, 2023.- The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, through the Secretary of State for Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructures, has published the provisional resolution of the call for the program UNICO Redes 5G backhaul, which will accelerate the deployment of this technology in rural areas of Spain. For Castilla y León, operators will receive more than 107 million euros to carry out installations in 1,940 assigned sites. That amount represents 23.8% of the funds with which this program is provided for the whole of Spain and is the highest of all the autonomous communities.
This program, financed with European funds Next Generation EU within the framework of the Recovery Plan and aligned with the objectives of the Spain Digital 2026 agenda, together with the next call for UNICO Active 5G Networks, represents an investment of almost 1,000 million euros for the deployment of this technology in rural municipalities.
At the end of the evaluation process of the 255 applications submitted by 11 operators to cover the 50 provinces, it has been decided to grant aid amounting to 448.8 million euros to the projects submitted by eight of them to provide backhaul connection by means of optical fiber - including active and passive elements - to sites (towers) of the public mobile telephone networks that do not have such connection in municipalities of less than 5,000 inhabitants.
The temporary grants contribute to the goal of deploying the necessary capabilities to deliver 5G-based services and applications in rural areas. These actions promote territorial cohesion, avoid the formation of a digital divide in the deployment of 5G and allow us to face the demographic challenge, promoting new economic activities and opportunities to all corners. With the subsidies, the operators will be able to carry out investments and expenses associated with the development of projects for the deployment of fiber to the towers from infrastructure and civil works to equipment and materials.
In Castilla y León, the amount to be received by the operators exceeds 107 million euros. By province, Burgos will receive more than 20 million for the connection of 414 points or towers; in León the Government has given aid worth more than 18 million for 371 connection towers. In Salamanca, the aid amounts to 13.3 million to make connections at 271 points, while Zamora has been allocated more than 12 million for 187 sites. In Valladolid the aid exceeds 10 million for the installation of 158 towers and in Soria there will be actions worth 9 million euros. Segovia will receive almost 9 million and in Ávila the subsidies are worth 8 million euros for 122 posts. Finally, Palencia exceeds 7.5 million investments for the installation of 156 posts.
On the other hand, for Castilla La Mancha, 63.3 million in aid has been allocated, followed by Aragon, 49, and Andalusia, 48.3.
As for the companies requesting the aid, it should be noted that in Castilla y León, Adamo Telecom, Telefónica Iberia, Tradia Telecom, Avatel Telecom, Lyntia Network and Totem Towerco Spain are the ones that have submitted offers to carry out these actions.

SINGLE PROGRAMME 5G NETWORKS
The Digital Infrastructure for Cohesion Universalization Program (UNICO) serves as a framework for different calls that facilitate the universalization of ultra-fast broadband access and 5G extension.
Under the umbrella of UNICO Redes 5G are those aids intended to boost the deployment of this technology, as well as the services and applications available for 5G in municipalities of less than 10,000 inhabitants.
