Soria, May 3.- In the subdelegation of the Government of Soria, Antonio Sastre presented "Geolodía Soria 2023" and its corresponding "Geologuía" at a press conference attended by the subdelegate of the Government, Miguel Latorre. The excursion, free and open to those who register, will take place next Saturday, day 6, starting at 09:30 h. from the medieval bridge over the Douro, located between Gormaz and Remembrance.
Geolodia is an activity of dissemination of the Earth Sciences that is mainly based on the realization of a geological field recognition for a place of interest. The activity is coordinated by the Geological Society of Spain and the excursion is guided by experts in geology and open to all types of public. Its main objective is to show that Geology is an attractive and useful science for our society.
Registrations must be requested to antonio.sastre@uah.es.
Antonio Sastre, coordinator of "Geolodía Soria 2023" and full professor of Hydrology, Water Management and Environmental Impact Assessment at the University of Alcalá, has pointed out that this is an "activity proposed as a day of active approach to the geological natural heritage and, by extension, to the natural environment of the chosen place as an area to be recognized". It has also indicated that it is monitored by professors expert in the teaching of Earth Sciences. “It is an initiative promoted by the Geological Society of Spain, the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology of the Ministry of Science and Innovation and the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain of the Centre for Scientific Research (CSIC), among other institutions,” he said.
"Geolodía Soria 2023" aims to contribute to the dissemination of the geological natural heritage of the hill and environment of Gormaz, a Sorian place, which according to the "Geologuía Soria 2023", is "a singular place of the region of the Land of Burgo, integrated in the basin of Almazán. Its summit is a well-known place, of singular location and historical relevance, but it is less well known from the geological, hydrogeological and geomorphological perspective.”
The field recognition of Geolodía Soria 2023 will be developed by professors Antonio Sastre, Gonzalo Montamarta Prieto, Felipe de Miguel Vela and Rosa Vicente, with the collaboration of Rosario Gómez and sponsored by the University of Alcalá. The Sub-Delegation of the Government in Soria, the Territorial Environmental Service, the Provincial Council, the Municipalities of Gormaz and Quintanas de Gormaz, as well as the company Duero Natura and the Bishopric of Osma-Soria collaborate decisively in its development.
Approach to field and itinerary recognition
The meeting and reception point of the participants has been established on the road (old road, currently in disuse) of access to the old bridge of the Douro from the SO-P-4126. As a legacy of its previous condition, it still retains the firm in good condition, but the non-circulation of vehicles by it is a guarantee of safety for the participants.
- Point 1 Alluvial plain of the Douro (immediate vicinity of the old bridge, currently used exclusively by pedestrians): [Consideration of alluvial deposits and typology of river bodies]. Relationship between the circulating surface water and the groundwater of the substrate.
- Point 2: Old road to the road leading to Gormaz. Base of the hill of Gormaz: recognition of the “upper carbonated complex” (cretaceous): limestones and dolomies of Castrojimeno
- Point 3: Surroundings of Gormaz. Discordant contact between the cretaceous limestones and dolomies and the myocene detritic sediments (calcareous lutites, sands and sandstones). Consideration of the stratigraphic gap between the two formations (angular discordance) and of the uniqueness of the hill of Gormaz.
- Point 4: Ermita de San Miguel (Romanesque wall paintings (groups of 30 people)
- Point 5: Base of the wall of the fortress of Gormaz. [Contact between myocene detrital materials and pliocene calcomargoses: geomorphological and hydrogeological incidence].
- Point 6. Interior of the fortress of Gormaz. Geological perspective from the top of the hill.
Descent along the enabled path towards Gormaz. Return to the meeting point.
- Point 7 (A and B): Groundwater discharge from the aquifer system of the Gormaz springs: Manantial de San Luis and fish farm of Duero Natural, on the one hand; Manantiales de Fuentes Grandes, on the other.
