- The government delegate in Cantabria attended this Monday the start of the works of the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility together with associations of neighbors
The government delegate in Cantabria, Pedro Casares, highlighted the commitment of the Government of Spain to contribute to making Santander “a more sustainable, more accessible and more friendly city” with the improvement of the N-611 and N-623 crossings, which will be “the most important works with public investment for the transformation of the Cantabrian capital in the last 30 years”.
Casares praised it this Monday at the beginning of these works of the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, which have started at the crossing of Campogiro (N-611) and which will involve an investment of 11.42 million euros from the Government of Spain in the city.
Accompanied by representatives of neighborhood residents’ associations in the areas of influence of these works, the government delegate has indicated that the works will last 27 months so that “they will be finished by the end of 2027 or January 2028.”
Some works that, he said, are undertaken “after decades of claims, promise and announcements” but that “have become reality with the Government of Pedro Sánchez” and that are going to improve the lives of the neighbors from Cuatro Caminos, Jerónimo Sáinz de la Maza, Cajo, Campogiro, Peñacastillo until May Day.
Casares stressed that the objective of all the action is “clear” and is none other than “to guarantee a sustainable and safe mobility” for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles in two main areas of access to the city of Santander, in which the entire configuration of the road will be improved and “the sidewalks will be widened and slopes reduced so that people with reduced mobility can travel safely”.
He explained that the project includes the construction of a total of nine roundabouts and highlighted the two planned at the Campogiro crossing, the three on Calle El Castro in El Campón or the new one that will be executed at the access to the shopping center of Peñacastillo.
Among other actions, he has pointed out that there will be a complete renovation of Jerónimo Sáinz de la Maza Street and García del Río Avenue, both on the N-623.
The government delegate has emphasized that this is “an integral improvement” of both crossings with a significant investment of almost 11.5 million euros and that it demonstrates “the commitment of the Government of Spain to improve Santander and the quality of life of its neighbors.”
DETAILS OF THE PERFORMANCE
The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has awarded this action for 11.42 million euros to the company Compañía General de Construcciones Abaldo and an execution period of 27 months. Once completed, the ownership of both vials will be transferred to the City of Santander.
The central objectives of these works are to adapt and improve the urban fabric of both journeys and to promote active, sustainable and safe mobility with bike lanes and wider sidewalks. With this action, a more friendly, accessible and functional environment will be achieved on the route of both routes.
It will be performed on the N-611 from the roundabout of the exchanger of Valdecilla to the limit with Santa Cruz de Bezana and on the N-623 from the roundabout of Cuatro Caminos to the limit with Camargo.
On both journeys, sidewalks will be widened and some new ones will be executed, 100 new benches and 30 bins will be installed, 81 tree species will be planted, lighting efficiency will be adapted and improved with 372 new lampposts, 7.4 kilometers of bike lanes will be built (2.6 km in N-623 and 4.8 km in N-611), and a total of 9 new roundabouts will also be executed to improve road safety.
The works on the N-611 range from the roundabout of Valdecilla to the border with the municipality of Santa Cruz de Bezana. In the first section, between the roundabout of Valdecilla and Calle Cajo there are two roundabouts, one in front of the houses of the Renfe and another next to the upper pass of the railway, as well as the improvement of the pavement of the sidewalks and the road and the execution of a bike lane.
In the area of Campogiro, where work has begun this Monday, one of the most significant actions of the project will be executed since the double intersection, located next to the Civil Guard Command, will be resolved, with the execution of two roundabouts. In addition, continuity is given to the same design of wide pavements, improvement of pavement and creation of bike lanes.
From Campogiro and on El Castro Street, next to the Campón polygon, the three existing intersections will be resolved with the construction of two roundabouts that will provide greater security of the accesses to the polygon and contribute to decrease the speed of circulation. In this area and up to the limit with Bezana, we will continue with the improvement of asphalt, wider sidewalks and gardens, as well as with the bike lane.
In the crossing of the N-623 will be acted from the roundabout of Cuatro Caminos to the limit with the municipality of Camargo. In the street Jerónimo Sáinz de la Maza, on the descent of the bullring, the sidewalks will be modernized, the pavement of the road will be restored and a bike lane will be created.
Subsequently, the performance will continue on Avenida García del Río in the first stretch of which it will execute an in-depth performance, with landscaped separation of the two directions of circulation, an area of new online parking, wide and properly lit sidewalks and a bidirectional bike lane.
While, in the second stretch, the pavement of the sidewalk and the road agglomerate will be renovated, a roundabout will be built at the entrance of the BSH factory and will leave connection for a future municipal road.
On this national highway, one of the most important actions of the project will also be carried out with the construction of a new roundabout access to the shopping center of Peñacastillo that will leave the current upper pass of municipal ownership unused. In this area until May Day, the bike path will be continued to connect it with the existing infrastructure and until the municipal limit with Camargo, the improved urban plot will be continued.
