• The government delegate in Cantabria has participated in the inauguration of the rehabilitation of this neighborhood, with 144 homes, and a total investment of 3.8 million euros
The government delegate in Cantabria, Pedro Casares, has highlighted the work of the Government of Spain both to obtain and to deploy European funds that have made it possible to rehabilitate the Barrio Obrero del Rey in Santander, with an investment of 3.8 million euros.
Casares participated this Friday in the inauguration of the rehabilitation of this centenary neighborhood of the capital of Cantabria together with the Autonomous President, María José Sáenz de Buruaga; the Councilor for Development, Housing, Regional Planning and Environment, Roberto Media; and the Mayor of Santander, Gema Igualo.
The representative of the State has valued the work of the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, so that today Spain, Cantabria and Santander are benefiting from European funds and these are being executed with “collaboration between administrations”.
Funds that have allowed the rehabilitation of the Barrio Obrero del Rey, where 2.6 million euros have arrived to which are added the remaining 1.2 financed “through the investment effort of the neighbors themselves”.
“Neighbors who have added their effort, their savings, their economic resources to the Government of Spain, to the Government of Pedro Sánchez, to make the transformation of their neighborhood, their home a reality,” added Casares.
He has detailed that the action in this neighborhood of Santander has been focused on energy efficiency, to reduce by 50% the energy consumption and CO2 emissions of homes and almost 60% the demand for heating, but has also allowed to improve the environment.
At this point, he referred to the works of similar characteristics that are being executed, also with European funds, in the homes of the Renfe in Cajo, where 15 portals are being rehabilitated and renovated with 120 homes that “we hope to be able to inaugurate in 2026”.
137 MILLION INVESTMENT FROM THE MINISTRY OF HOUSING
In addition, it has detailed that the Ministry of Housing and Urban Agenda has invested 137 million euros in the region in recent years, mainly to mobilize 1,740 homes, 378 new homes and 1,362 with rehabilitation.
It has also highlighted the rehabilitation programs of public buildings, with 11 million euros of investment in the autonomous community and with which the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Cantabria or several health centers are being rehabilitated, among others.
In addition, he has referred to the 18 million euros in investment in the rehabilitation of historical heritage through the 2% Cultural Program or 45.8 million through the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR) for the rehabilitation of neighborhoods, promotion of new housing or rehabilitation of homes.
“Another example of the public policies that we are promoting in Cantabria in terms of housing is the young rent bonus, with 11.4 million euros that are benefiting so many young people in this land,” added Casares.
To continue on this path, the government delegate has considered that it is necessary to work from all administrations on “shared efforts” and more in the field of housing, because it is “the main concern of many citizens”.
Therefore, it has asked the Government of Cantabria and its president to reach an agreement with the Government of Spain for the State Housing Plan 2026-2030, with which another 126 million euros will be invested in the community.
