• The government delegate in Cantabria visited on Monday the vessel SAR Gavia de Salvamento Maritime and the facilities of the Coordination Center
The government delegate in Cantabria, Pedro Casares, has highlighted the fundamental work of Salvamento Marítimo, a service dependent on the Directorate of Merchant Marine of the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility and which has carried out 118 interventions in the autonomous community until September.
This has been pointed out by the representative of the State in the Autonomous Community after visiting the vessel SAR Gavia de Salvamento Maritime accompanied by the head of the Coordination Center of Santander, Germán Erostabe; and the maritime captain, César Díez.
Casares has indicated that this State service is responsible for protecting the lives of people at risk at sea, as well as assisting boats in distress and controlling maritime traffic. Also, although less well known, Salvamento Marítimo is responsible for the fight against marine pollution.
“With this visit we want to highlight the extraordinary work they do on a daily basis and, above all, to value the public services that serve us, especially at sea,” said the government delegate.
Also, Casares has detailed the activity developed by this service during the first nine months of this year, until September, with the realization of 118 interventions of which half have been for the protection of people.
He also recalled that the Santander Coordination Center has a rapid intervention vessel, the ship María de Maeztu, a Helimer rescue helicopter at the Seve Ballesteros airport and 38 workers among ground personnel and crew, which he described as “a very solid endowment to deal with emergencies.”
Regarding the SAR Gavia ship that visited this Monday, Casares has indicated that it is one of the two tugboats with which Salvamento counts to serve the Cantabrian Coast.
It is a ship that can reach a maximum speed of 13 knots. Its autonomy at cruising speed is 6,000 nautical miles and has a crew of 10 people plus two passengers. Its construction involved an investment of 12.6 million euros.Texto
