The government delegate in Cantabria, Pedro Casares, has highlighted the work of the Government of Spain against illegal tourist housing within the framework of all the initiatives it is promoting to face “the main problem of many Spanish and Cantabrian families”.
To this end, Casares has praised the Executive chaired by Pedro Sánchez as the first country in Europe to create the Single Registry of Temporary Accommodations, in collaboration with the College of Registrars, to end fraud in tourist rentals.
In the framework of the verification of the documentation for the inscriptions, the delegate has indicated that the Ministry of Housing has detected that in Cantabria there are 955 illegal tourist homes, which do not comply with the regional and/or municipal regulations to be able to operate as tourist accommodation.
Therefore, the detail of these irregular tourist homes has been notified to the digital platforms to remove the ads from them, something that will happen “in the near future” given the “good disposition” expressed by the main portals to the department of Isabel Rodríguez.
Casares detailed this Tuesday in statements to the media that 43% of the illegal tourist homes detected in Cantabria are concentrated in four municipalities. At the head is Santander, with 220 floors that will be removed from the temporary rental platforms; followed by Suances, with 79; Comillas, with 60; and San Vicente de la Barquera, with 54.
The 955 tourist homes that do not meet the requirements are located in 76 municipalities of Cantabria, which means that almost 75% of the municipalities in the region have in their territory “some illegal temporary rental housing”, said the government delegate.
Casares has pointed out that the “withdrawal” of these irregular tourist accommodations from the market is “fundamental” for housing to reach “those who need it most, which are families and young people.”
“All public administrations have to focus efforts on tackling the housing problem as the Spanish Government has been doing since Pedro Sánchez became president,” he said.
“SOLUTIONS ON THE TABLE”
At this point, the government delegate in Cantabria pointed out that, despite being a competence of the autonomies, the Executive “does not want to sit back and put solutions on the table”.
For this reason, he recalled that a Ministry of Housing has been created, a Housing Law has been promoted and the declaration of stressed areas to “end the crazy rental prices” and aid has been implemented to facilitate access to housing for young people.
He also highlighted the State’s commitment to tripling public investment in housing, which in Cantabria would mean going from 35 million euros to almost 130 million euros for the next five years (2026-2030), of which the Government of Spain would assume 60% and autonomy the remaining 40% but, to do so, “the Government of Cantabria has to say yes”, the delegate to the Executive chaired by María José Sáenz de Buruaga has summoned.
“And we are not staying there and, therefore, the President of the Government has announced new measures that we are going to implement,” said Casares, who has broken down these measures.
The first is an aid of up to 30,000 euros so that young people can use them to buy rental homes with the option to buy; the second is the insurance of non-payment of rent; and the third is an aid of 10,800 euros for those who want to buy a home in rural areas.
“These are concrete measures, which try to solve one of the most important problems that men and women in Cantabria and Spain have,” added Casares.
