The Government of Spain will enable 82 parking spaces and will build a new bike lane parallel to the N-634 road as it passes through San Vicente de la Barquera, according to the Government delegate in Cantabria, Eugenia Gómez de Diego, after meeting with the mayor of the municipality, Charo Urquiza, at the city headquarters.
The project, drafted by the General Directorate of Roads of the State -agency dependent of the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility that directs Óscar Puente -, will improve mobility in one of the main accesses to the town of Barquereña, while gaining a new space for citizen use and strengthening road safety.
According to Gómez de Diego, the action will begin at the height of the roundabout of access to the fishing port, in the Paseo de la Barquera, and will last for two kilometers in the direction of Val de San Vicente, until almost reaching the junction with the autonomous road that gives access to the beach of Fuentes.
On the right side of the road, a bidirectional bike lane of more than 2.2 meters wide will be built, while on the left, the parking spaces will be enabled in a row and a pedestrian promenade that will connect with the viewpoint of Santillán and the rest area.
"This is an action that responds to a municipal demand and that fits fully with the objectives of the Government of Spain to promote more sustainable, safe and healthy mobility," said the delegate. "With this project we gained parking spaces and a new leisure space for neighbors and visitors, promoting the use of the bicycle and strengthening accessibility," he added.
The mayor of San Vicente de la Barquera thanked the central executive for his "willingness and commitment to the needs of the municipality", and especially valued that the project integrates both the creation of parking spaces, as requested by the municipal government team, and the creation of the pedestrian promenade and the bike lane, which, according to Urquiza, "will be the first in the municipality".
"It was a very necessary action, which we had requested, and which will represent a very positive change for our neighbors and for those who visit us," said Urquiza, who also highlighted the improvement in road safety that this project will entail.
The first deputy mayor, Julián Vélez, and the other members of the Municipal Corporation also participated in the meeting.
82 new parking spaces
The new car park, which will have 82 parking spaces – two of them reserved for people with reduced mobility, the closest to the urban plot – will offer an additional alternative to parking in the municipality, which will be especially useful in the summer months, when the population multiplies given the high tourist attraction of the municipality.
The action will take advantage of the current platform of the national road, eliminating the third lane that had been practically disused, which will allow to order the available space and facilitate the coexistence between vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists.
