The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility is carrying out the works of modernization of the tunnels of Caviedes, Hoz, Torrelavega (on the A-8 motorway), Gibaja and Limpias (on the N-629 road), all of them in Cantabria. These works have an investment of 13.13 million euros (VAT included) and are part of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR), financed by the NextGenerationEU funds.
In this context, from next Monday 26 a new evacuation gallery will be executed in the Torrelavega tunnel, located between km 229 and 230 of the A-8.
Therefore, and in order to guarantee the safety of workers and users, the following effects on traffic will occur:
From 22:00 hours on Monday 26 to 6:00 hours on Tuesday 27 May, traffic will be cut to the Bilbao/Palencia direction, repeating the same night cut during the same times until Friday 6 June.
From 22:00 hours on Monday 26 to 13:00 hours on the 27th of June, the left lane of the Bilbao/Palencia direction tube will remain cut.
To ensure the fluidity of traffic during the total cut of the tube direction Bilbao/Palencia, the following alternative itineraries duly signposted will be enabled:
- The vehicles coming from the A-8 from Asturias whose destination is Bilbao or Palencia will be able to continue their march through a detour through exit 231 (Industrial Zone - Torrelavega) being directed towards the northern entrance of Torrelavega (access roundabout), the northern Ronda and the area of the Ochos, whose existing signage will indicate the destination. Both the necessary detours on the motorway’s driveway, as well as the roundabouts, will be signposted indicating the destinations of Bilbao and Palencia.
- The vehicles coming from the A-67 from Santander will follow the Torrelavega – Centro Urbano exit. Once you reach the town center through the northern roundabout, you will be indicated your departure through the Ronda Norte and the Ochos area to continue your march towards Bilbao/Palencia. The itinerary will be duly signposted with Bilbao/Palencia information posters.
In summary, the traffic damage caused by the total night cut of the tunnel towards Bilbao/Palencia will last until Friday, June 6, while the damage caused by the cut of the left lane of this same tube will last until Friday, June 27.
In total, in Cantabria, the works of modernization and improvement of the safety of 16 tunnels of the State Road Network are under execution, for a budget of 49 million euros.
