The Cantabrian Hydrographic Confederation has begun the work of renovating and improving the station for the measurement of flows of the Asón River in the vicinity of the town of Coterillo, in the municipality of Ampuero. This work is carried out with the aim of improving the capacity for registering flows of the middle basin of the Asón River within the Automatic Hydrometeorological Information System (SAI CH Cantábrico). Actions financed under the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, financed by the European Union – NextGenerationEU.
The control station, located in the vicinity of the town of Coterillo since 1969, presents an advanced deterioration so that it is demolished and replaced by a new one. The actions, with an initial budget of 360 000 €, consist of the adaptation and improvement of the station of the SAI CHCantábrico in the Asón River in Coterillo, which will allow the registration of the ecological minimum flows of the middle basin of the Asón River and will facilitate the historical registration of flows and the early detection of possible avenues in the lower section of the basin.
The design of the new control station has been designed to ensure optimal environmental integration, ensuring that the structure does not disturb ecological processes, especially the migration of fish species, such as Atlantic salmon, which are of great importance in this basin.
These works are carried out through the public company Tragsa within the program, Actions of recovery and improvement of river continuity in the scope of the Cantabrian Hydrographic Confederation. In the year 2024 the investment made in works of recovery and improvement of the river continuity in Cantabria was of 1 800 000 euros, distributed in 29 actions in 20 municipalities.
