During the months of July and August 2024, the roads of Cantabria have recorded a total of 539 traffic accidents, with a balance of three people dead, 21 injured hospitalized and 251 slightly injured. These data represent a slight decrease in road accidents with respect to the same period of 2023, when 541 accidents were recorded, with four deaths, 18 hospitalized injuries and 232 minor injuries.
The fatal accidents occurred: on July 20, in the CA-141 at the height of Argoños, where a motorcyclist died; on July 27, in the N-634 at the height of Hazas de Cesto after the turn of a tourism; and on July 28, in the Parayas Avenue of Alto Maliaño, in an accident that involved a tourism.
In terms of mobility, approximately 1,465,000 trips were recorded on the roads of Cantabria, which represents an increase of 4% compared to the same period of the previous year. Despite the increase in mobility, the number of retentions and congestion problems has been lower, due to a staggering of the accesses and returns and the more favorable weather, as well as improvements and progress of the works in the junction of the A-67 and A-8 motorways.
The special road safety device deployed this summer has counted on the participation of 240 people, including 180 agents of the Traffic Group of the Civil Guard (ATGC) and 60 officials and technical personnel. In addition, the Local Police of various municipalities, road maintenance personnel and emergency services have collaborated.
During the summer months, two control and surveillance campaigns were carried out: in July, focused on speed control, and in August, on alcohol and drug control. As part of this special campaign to control alcohol and drugs, the Civil Guard Traffic Group conducted 2,821 tests, with a total of 36 drivers reported.
In total, during these two summer months, the agents carried out 23,729 alcohol tests. In addition, special campaigns aimed at motorcycles were carried out during four weekends.
