The government delegate in Cantabria, Eugenia Gómez de Diego, and the mayor of Val de San Vicente, Roberto Escobedo, visited today the works being carried out by the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility on the N-621 road at the height of Molleda, at kilometre 186.5. With an investment of 263,400 euros, these actions aim to improve road safety at a bend intersection with the autonomous road CA-841.
The current intersection allows for left-hand turns, which poses a considerable risk due to the speed at which vehicles travel. In addition, a significant number of pedestrians and tractors cross the two lanes of the national road to pass between the village and the path of the Deva River Valley.
According to the Government delegate, “to increase safety, a central lane will be established to make the turns to the left, and pedestrian crossings and sidewalks will be installed on both sides of the road.” These works, which will be carried out by pre-milling and subsequent spreading of a 5 centimetre layer of agglomerate, will also include the improvement of drainage.
“The intersection will move slightly towards Potes, which will allow the different movements to be carried out with greater security and fluidity. In addition, to ensure that vehicles travel at an appropriate speed, traffic lane narrowing measures will be implemented and two elevated passes will be installed on both sides of the section, thus forcing drivers to slow down,” said Gómez de Diego.
For his part, the mayor, Roberto Escobedo, stressed that it is a “work of great importance” not only for the people of Molleda, but also for Prío and for all users of the valley, and thanked the Ministry for the investment and the delegate for the follow-up of the project which, he stressed, was “very demanded” by the City Council and the neighbors.
In this way, the delegate and the municipal councilor have agreed to highlight the importance of this intervention, since it will mean “a substantial improvement” to guarantee the safety of all road users “in a zone of much transit”, both underlining the joint effort between the Ministry and the City Council to carry out these essential improvements.
Road safety plan
Gómez de Diego highlighted that these works reflect the commitment of the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility to improve road safety and the quality of infrastructure in the region, “not only in large works, but also in this type of interventions that are very important for municipalities by improving road safety for road traffic and pedestrians.”
The action that is being carried out in Molleda is part of the road safety plan in the State road network that is being carried out by the Ministry of Transport in Cantabria and that includes a total of 8 interventions.
Specifically, the department headed by Óscar Puente invests 2.49 million euros in intersection improvement works in several p.k. of the roads N-611, N-621, N-634, A-67 and A-8, in the municipal terms of Piélagos, Val de San Vicente, San Vicente de la Barquera, Torrelavega, Bárcena de Cicero, Colindres, Liérganes and Castro Urdiales, which includes a pedestrian-bike route in line with the State Strategy for the Bicycle.
