The government delegate in Cantabria, Eugenia Gómez de Diego, today received a representation from the Freedom Flotilla, an organization that seeks to raise awareness about the situation in Gaza and promote humanitarian aid.
During the meeting, Gómez de Diego transferred the commitment of the Government of Spain to peace and humanitarian aid in Gaza, which will materialize with a new aid package worth 16 million euros.
In addition, he recalled that the Spanish Executive has approved the official recognition of the State of Palestine, stressing the importance of this gesture “in the search for a peaceful and lasting solution in the region”.
The delegate stressed that this recognition, which is not adopted against anyone, “is a question of historical justice that responds to an urgent need to achieve peace among all,” as stated by the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez:
In this regard, Gómez de Diego reiterated the need to end the unprecedented crisis in the Gaza Strip and joined the call made by the Government of Spain for a permanent ceasefire, the entry of humanitarian aid and the immediate release of the Israeli hostages in the hands of Hamas.
Arrival to the Peninsula
The Freedom Flotilla arrived this Saturday at the port of Santander in its navigation to Gaza to break up and denounce the situation. After sailing on May 1st in Oslo and crossing several European ports (Sweden, Denmark, Germany, United Kingdom, Ireland and France), it will remain in the Cantabrian capital until this Tuesday 25th, when it will sail to A Coruña, its next stop, scheduled to arrive two days later, on the 27th.
The Handala boat will be on the Peninsula until mid-July, highlighting the ports of Lisbon, Vélez in Malaga and, finally, Dénia, from which it will depart to other ports in the Mediterranean on its route to Gaza.
In 2011, the International Coalition of the Freedom Flotilla was created, which conducts navigations to denounce the blockade of Gaza. By visiting ports across Europe, you aim to raise awareness of the plight of the Palestinian people and enlist the support of people along the way.
