The University of Cantabria (UC) will receive 2 million euros from the UNICO R+D 6G program, an initiative of the Government of Spain to promote research and development of the next generation of mobile technology. This investment will allow UC to develop cutting-edge projects in the field of 6G, positioning it as a national and international reference in this field.
The UNICO R+D 6G programme has a total of 62 million euros and aims to strengthen the research ecosystem around 6G technology. In this call, 43 projects have been selected from universities, research centers and companies from all over the country.
UC has been one of the universities most benefiting from the program, with funding of 2 million euros, the highest amount. This investment will enable the University to develop research projects in areas such as high-speed mobile communication, cloud computing, artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things.
"The granting of these funds is excellent news for the University of Cantabria and for the entire region," said the government delegate in Cantabria, Eugenia Gómez de Diego. "This investment demonstrates the commitment of the Government of Spain to R+D+I and the development of the digital economy. It also highlights the importance of UC as a key player in the country's technological development."
UC has extensive research experience in the field of mobile communications. In recent years, the University has participated in several European projects related to the development of 5G technology. The funding of the UNICO R+D 6G program will allow UC to continue its leadership in this field and contribute to the development of the next generation of mobile technology.
Investing in R+D+I
Gómez de Diego ha defendido que la inversión en I+D+i es clave para el crecimiento económico y social de Cantabria. “The UNICO R+D 6G program is an example of how the Government of Spain is betting on innovation to create a better future for all,” he said.
In addition to investment in research, the UNICO R+D 6G programme also includes measures to encourage collaboration between the public and private sectors. This will allow UC to work with companies to develop innovative technology solutions that can be used in the real market.
The UNICO R+D 6G 2023 program is led by the Ministry for Digital Transformation and the Public Service, through the Secretary of State for Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructures, who has published today the final resolution of the call.
Over 200 million total investment
The Secretary of State for Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructures, María González Veracruz, has celebrated this new step “in the promotion of demand and the development of capacities in the 5G and 6G value chain. These disruptive technologies are going to multiply the economic possibilities with the applications that these aids promote, and the Government is preparing our country in both capacities and infrastructures to put this technology at the service of the economy and people.”
The Secretary of State recalled that “with the 62 million of this third call we exceeded 200 million total investment, and with these new 43 projects we reached a total of 203 projects benefiting, adding to those of the calls 2021 and 2022 of UNICO R+D”.
