The Secretary of State for Transport and Sustainable Mobility, José Antonio Santano, and the delegate of the Government in Cantabria, Eugenia Gómez de Diego, visited today the Nueva Montaña roadhouse to check the progress of the works of duplication and electrification of the road between Santander and Muriedas.
Santano has highlighted that the works are progressing as planned and has anticipated that in this second half of the year three new milestones will be reached in the Proximity Plan:
- Optimization of light signals: They will complete the work of optimization of light signals, which will allow to increase the speed of the trains as they pass through certain apeadores.
- Renovation of the apeadero of Valdecilla: The facilities will be modernized to improve the accessibility and comfort of travelers.
- Duplication and electrification of track between Santander and Muriedas: The capacity of the line will be doubled to allow a greater number of frequencies and improve the reliability of the path.
Restoration of service in New Mountain
These actions are part of the work being carried out by the Government of Spain to completely renew the network of Neighbourhoods of Cantabria, with an investment of more than 1.3 billion euros.
Of this investment, more than 900 million euros have already been mobilized, which has allowed progress in the renewal of the network and in the acquisition of a new train fleet that is currently under construction.
Even today, Renfe has resumed service in the Nueva Montaña apeadero, which had been temporarily suspended due to the works of duplication and electrification of the track and the renovation works of the apeadero itself, which are practically finished in the absence of the last finishing touches, with the new elevator scheduled to come into service this summer.
“The improvements in the Vicinity of Cantabria are already beginning to be noticed. An example of this is the reduction of the travel time on the Santander-Liérganes metric width line by 5 minutes”, said the delegate, who pointed to the horizon 2026-2027 when the improvement of the service will be noted.
During the visit, Santano and Gómez de Diego were accompanied by the High Commissioner, Antonio Berrios, and the delegate of Institutional Relations of Renfe, Vicente Santamaría, as well as those responsible for the company that executes the works of Nueva Montaña.
