The Government delegate in Cantabria, Ainoa Quiñones, has advocated the joint work of administrations and drivers to continue reducing road accidents and has also opted to continue intensifying awareness campaigns to continue reducing the number of victims of traffic accidents, especially among vulnerable users (motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians).
Quiñones has pointed this out this Monday after the rally held at the entrance of the Government Delegation on the occasion of the World Day in Remembrance of Victims of Traffic Accidents, which is commemorated on the third Sunday of November.
On this World Day in Remembrance of the Victims of Traffic Accidents the message to transmit is: “We don’t want more victims to remember, we want to live our lives together.”
The delegate of the Government has detailed that, until yesterday, in this 2023, 21 people have died on the Cantabrian roads in traffic accidents, 14 in interurban roads and seven in urban roads. And, so far this year, 2,898 accidents have been recorded in Cantabria, which, in addition to the deaths, have caused 116 injuries with hospitalization and 1,162 mild, he said.
The provincial head of Traffic, José Miguel Tolosa, participated in the concentration, who recalled the importance of campaigns to sensitize and raise awareness in Cantabrian society about such important matters as alcohol and drugs, use of motorcycles, distractions in driving or correct condition of tyres.
The Chief Colonel of the Civil Guard, Antonio Orantos; the Chief Police Officer, Carmen Martínez; the Commander of the Traffic Sector of the Civil Guard of Cantabria, Rubén Flores; the Head of the State Road Demarcation in Cantabria, Rosendo Martínez; representatives of Autonomous Roads, 112 and 061, of several Local Police, of municipalities, of agencies of the Autonomous Government, of the Public Prosecutor of Road Safety, of professional associations and, of course, members of the entities of relatives and victims of traffic accidents have also attended.
Thus, the associations NUBA, Stop Accidents, Santa Clotilde Traffic Victims Unit, Moto-links and collaborating entities in road education have also been invited to the concentration.
WORLD DAY MANIFESTO
In the rally, a minute of silence was observed and the Manifesto for the World Day in Remembrance of the Victims of Traffic Accidents was read by Rebeca Fernández, the mother of the moped driver who died last year in Marqués de la Hermida in Santander, Manuel Manrique.
In the manifesto, it has been indicated that every death and every person injured on a sinister road is an avoidable tragedy. In accordance with the Road Safety Strategy 2030, we must work with the objective of reducing by half the number of people who die or are seriously injured as a result of a road accident in that year.
The achievement of this objective must be carried out jointly. Road safety is a matter for the whole of society, it requires the involvement of everyone and in which we cannot leave anyone behind. This affects all the competent administrations, but also companies and social organizations. And, most importantly, to the very people who live together on public roads. Only by working together, each operating on the basis of their own responsibility and knowledge, will we achieve those goals.
From the General Administration of the State, with the General Directorate of Traffic and together with other administrations, agencies, entities and associations, work is being done to reduce the numbers of accidents and to ensure that every year there are more days without deaths and to alleviate the serious consequences that road accidents cause for the whole of society.
