The delegate of the Government in Cantabria, Ainoa Quiñones, has claimed the role of “those brave and determined women” who made their way in the Civil Guard in 1988 when, for the first time, they were able to oppose to enter the body and recalled that more than 2,800 women presented themselves and 197 obtained a place to be the first agents of the Civil Guard.
He pointed this out in the tribute ceremony for the 35th anniversary of the incorporation of women into the Civil Guard that was held in the Plaza Velarde in Santander and in which, accompanied by the Colonel Chief of the Civil Guard, Antonio Orantos, he made a magazine pass to women who are part of the different units of the body in the Autonomous Community.
Quiñones has extolled that at that time “a historical event was taking place” because the institution of the Civil Guard, with 144 years of history in that year, “opened its doors to women”. “35 years later there is still a long way to go for the full incorporation of women in all spaces of public life and also in the Civil Guard, but we want to recognize their steps, which are the best guide for those who come after them,” he said.
For the delegate of the Government in Cantabria, “the steps of those courageous and determined women, who made their way in the Civil Guard at the end of the eighties, make that today in Cantabria we have 112 women working and watching over our security, trust and social peace”. It is 9.8% of the staff of the Civil Guard in Cantabria, it does so “let’s exceed the national average”.
At this point, he has detailed that in the country as a whole there are 7,715 women in the Civil Guard, representing 9% of the approximately 88,600 agents of the body.
Quiñones has assured that the will of the Government of Spain is “to continue advancing to increase the number of women in the Civil Guard” and, for this, works on “measures that allow the compatibility of work and family life” and “encourages women to access the selection and training processes to enter the Civil Guard”.
“But the most important thing today is them and their example. The entry of women into the Civil Guard has allowed and allows the creation of referents for these girls, for these young women, who see in these women the example of what they want to become. Courageous, determined, committed women, true public servants who give their best with their work to Spain and Cantabria”, he concluded.
