The island director of the General Administration of the State in La Gomera, Juan Luis Navarro, presented this Tuesday, July 9, the “Carpa Punto Violeta”, which the Island Directorate makes available to the Association of Gara Women for assistance to victims of sexual assault and all kinds of male violence in popular events and festivities.
In the presence of local authorities and organizations before the Insular Directorate in the Gomera capital, Juan Luis Navarro, on behalf of the Government of Spain, has formalized the transfer of this tent to the president of the Association of Gara Women, Sara Guadalupe Arteaga, with which a Violeta Point will be installed in events with a large influx of public that take place on the island.
“With this initiative, we want to improve access to assistance for victims of male violence, offering new facilities to prevent and respond to attacks. The State must provide all means at its disposal to facilitate victims ' access to existing remedies. And within that duty is also the proactivity when approaching the attacked women and not waiting for them to go to the offices of any of the institutions,” says the island director in La Gomera.
“That is why we wanted to collaborate with Gara to get closer to women in those spaces and occasions that could lead to aggression. We could not stay out of the association’s initiative to provide assistance and information to women at popular festivities, where they may be subjected to some kind of aggression. The State supports this initiative with means and wants to let the victims know that it is with them in any circumstance,” he adds.
Juan Luis Navarro highlights that the Insular Directorate carries out continuous work to raise awareness and raise awareness of the importance of the fight against male violence, as a common enterprise of the whole of the Gomera society, and within this framework is also the installation of signs in all the municipalities of the island as well as “Municipalities committed against gender violence”, initiative presented last March by the government delegate in the Canary Islands, Anselmo Pestana.
For her part, the president of the Gara Women’s Association states: "It is more than evident the need to bring integral services closer to the victims through their environment, and that the festive spaces are safe spaces, in which the environment and the attitude of respect of men and women allow us to enjoy the party without violence, without the risk of sexist aggressions, whatever the intensity."
Sara Guadalupe Arteaga also appreciates the collaboration provided by the Insular Directorate of the General Administration of the State in La Gomera, calling on all the authorities, the Security Forces and Bodies and the whole society, “to eradicate once and for all gender violence and male violence.”
Violeta points in popular festivities of La Gomera
The Violeta Points are the access door that the Government Delegation against Gender Violence of the Ministry of Equality makes available to women victims of all kinds of male violence to access the assistance resources that the Administration makes available to them.
The “Carpa Punto Violeta” is a safe and confidential space that will be present in all the festive and cultural events of La Gomera, where women who feel violated in these events can find reception, support and accompaniment, thus offering them a space of information and assistance, as well as necessary tools to get out of the situation of violence and build a life free of fear.
The transfer of this tent is part of a series of awareness-raising initiatives against male violence that the Unit against Violence against Women of the Insular Directorate of the General Administration of the State is carrying out in collaboration with different entities of La Gomera.
