The insular director of the General Administration of the State in La Gomera, Juan Luis Navarro, presided on Wednesday, March 6, the ceremony to give recognition to the women of the municipalities of the island that the Insular Directorate organizes on the occasion of International Women's Day, 8M, which on this occasion seeks to recognize their work as entrepreneurs in sport.
These awards, which are awarded to one woman for each municipality and are given at the headquarters of the Insular Directorate in San Sebastián de La Gomera, seek the recognition of women who are exponents of involvement, leadership and commitment to society, all with a long history in the field of sports management, forming part of the directives of clubs that compete both at the insular, provincial or regional level.
The winners on this occasion are: María José Belda Plasencia (Agulo), Silvia Noguera Romero (Alajeró), María Cristina García Padrón (Hermigua), Silvia Martín Arteaga (San Sebastián de La Gomera), Yurena Raya Plasencia (Valle Gran Rey) and Edselín Hernández Plasencia (Vallehermoso).
Congresswoman Esther Rodríguez, the Mayor of San Sebastián de La Gomera, Angélica Padilla, the Councillor for Social Services of the Cabildo Insular de La Gomera, Rosa Elena García, and the councilors Oriana Plasencia (Agulo), Águeda Franquis (Alajeró), Guillermo Coello (Hermigua), Lorena Damas (Valle Gran Rey) and Óscar Valhermoso attended and accompanied the awards ceremony.
This event is part of the activities organized by the Insular Directorate of the General Administration of the State in La Gomera to celebrate 8M, which in the Colombian island began with the presentation of the poster of “Municipality committed against gender violence” last Friday, March 1.
With the initiative of the Island Directorate and the collaboration of the Island Council and the six municipalities, La Gomera is already a pioneer in Spain as it is the first national territory where all municipalities declare themselves committed against gender violence with signs on the access roads next to the toponymic ones.
Tomorrow, Friday, March 8, the Insular Directorate in La Gomera will join the entrance of its building in the Plaza de Las Americas of the capital of the island to the readings of the institutional declaration that the Government Delegation has convened for 11 hours before its seven island headquarters.
The island director in La Gomera has stressed, in this sense, that “this 8M from the Island Directorate wants to give greater visibility to actions for equality between women and men, exalting in turn the values of the gomera and its determined commitment to a respectful world with a coexistence free of sexist stereotypes”.
