Zaragoza/Huesca/Teruel.- The celebration of International Women's Day, March 8, is a fundamental date for the Government Delegation in Aragon and the Subdelegations in Zaragoza, Huesca and Teruel. Throughout the week, with the fundamental support of the Units against Violence Against Women, different activities have been organized with which to continue claiming the rights of women. In addition, the three administrative offices are displaying banners put up by the authorities and social representatives in order to make society aware that it is necessary to continue fighting so that there are no setbacks in the rights and freedoms of women.

In Zaragoza, the government delegate in Aragón, Fernando Beltrán, was accompanied by representatives of the Somos Más Association, to place the banner on the balcony of the building. Somos brings together a collective of women survivors of male violence who have found the strength to rebuild our lives and support other women on their path to freedom. In this regard, Delegate Beltrán stressed that "now more than ever we must defend the rights and advances won against the regression and negationism that some political formations try to impose, and continue working against structural challenges such as the wage gap and glass ceilings."

For her part, Natalia Morlas, president of Somos Más, has claimed the presence of the victims in acts like this and in society in general to make visible the gender violence against those who deny it, and pointed out the tragic beginning of the year with 10 women and two minors killed at the hands of their partner or ex-partner.

Celebration in Huesca

Representatives of the unions CCOO and UGT and of the National Police and the Civil Guard have participated in the Subdelegation of the Government in Huesca in the placement of the banner on the occasion of the celebration of 8-M, International Women's Day. A commemoration in which this year, as subdelegate José Carlos Campo has pointed out, the emphasis has been placed on the fight for equal pay and the recognition of the high value that women’s employment brings to society.

The event was attended by Mar Carrillo, delegate of the Federation of Health of CCOO; Patricia Abardía, delegate of Education of UGT; Mar Gil, inspector of the National Police; and Diana Cordero, agent of the Civil Guard, as well as María Jesús Savicente, head of the VioGen Unit of the Subdelegation of the Government in Huesca, and Amparo Roig, general secretary of the Subdelegation.

According to the latest data, from 2023, the gender pay gap in Aragon stands at 19.14%, the lowest value in the historical series. The reduction has been noticeable since 2017, when it stood at 24%, and coincides with the general improvement in salary from the increase in the Minimum Interprofessional Salary (SMI), which has had a special impact on the sectors with the highest female employment.

For the government’s deputy delegate in Huesca, “although the evolution is positive, it is unacceptable that this wage gap, associated with structural discrimination in the labor market, continues to exist.” In this regard, he recalled that a substantial part of the current pay gap is explained by the persistence of biases that undervalue occupations carried out mostly by women, in sectors as important as social and health care.

Campo has called for all institutions and economic agents to set themselves the objective of “correcting this undervaluation, because it can happen in situations of precariousness, labor poverty and inequality in pensions.” The deputy delegate stressed that the increase in the SMI has been accompanied by other measures such as the revaluation of pensions. Thus, the average pension in Huesca stands at 1,316 euros, 4.7% more than last year, with 5,700 women benefiting from the supplement to reduce the gender gap, which means an average additional income of 74 euros per month to compensate for the difference in salary that has meant throughout their working life raising children.

Celebration in Teruel

The Coordinator of Feminist Organizations of Teruel and the Unit against Violence against Women of the Subdelegation of the Government continue to collaborate to give greater recognition to Roma women on Wikipedia on the occasion of International Women’s Day.

This initiative aims to reduce the gender gap in the digital sphere and give greater visibility to prominent women in the province through the largest online encyclopedia. Currently, only 13% of people editing information on Wikipedia are women, and only 20% of published biographies correspond to female figures.

The project was launched last year with the creation and dissemination of biographies of women who have left a significant mark in the history of the province, such as María Victoria García Ochoa, midwife who worked in Monreal del Campo since the 1950s and whose figure was recovered in the documentary La matrona, whose Wikipedia page is currently under review after incorporating new content and Montse Martínez González, professor and researcher in archaeology and history linked to the University of Zaragoza and the Teruel Campus, where she held various academic and institutional positions.

In 2026, the initiative continues with the incorporation into Wikipedia of the biography of Inmaculada Plaza García, professor of Electronic Technology at the University of Zaragoza and one of the main academic references in the technological field in Aragón.

Plaza García was the first woman to reach the chair in the area of Electronic Technology at the University of Zaragoza and also the first person to achieve this rank at the Polytechnic University School of Teruel (EUPT), center of which she was also director between 2014 and 2022. A researcher with more than a hundred scientific publications, she has promoted numerous projects related to technological innovation, engineering education and knowledge transfer.

Its trajectory has been recognized nationally and internationally. Among other awards, in 2022 she became the first European woman to receive the IEEE Women in Engineering Inspiring Member of the Year award, an international recognition granted by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Since 2023 she is also director of the Institute of Turolens Studies.

With this new addition, the Coordinator of Feminist Organizations of Teruel and the Unit against Violence against Women reaffirm their commitment to continue expanding the presence of relevant women of the province in Wikipedia, contributing to a more balanced representation of knowledge and the recovery of female references in areas such as science, culture, education or local history.

This action is part of a broader strategy to make women’s contributions visible and to promote women’s participation in the creation and editing of digital content.
