The Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (Mitma) has awarded, for an amount of 3.7 million euros (VAT included), the contract for works of modernization and improvement of the tunnels of La Cerrura, La Miel and Santa Lucía, located on the A-44 motorway, at the height of Sierra Mágina, and those of Despiñaperros and Cantera, on the A-4, as they pass through Sierra Morena, all of them in the province of Jaén.
This action will be carried out, regardless of the good state of the infrastructure, with the aim of adapting these facilities to the provisions of the Royal Decree on minimum safety requirements for tunnels of the trans-European road network.
Specifically, these projects include different projects to improve, depending on the case, emergency exits, signage, beaconing, lighting, ventilation, electrical installation, fire protection, drainage, communication and traffic management, among others.
The Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR) has a budget of 357 million euros from NextgenerationEU funds to adapt tunnels to European regulations and to enhance the protection of fauna and vulnerable users within the State Roads network (RCE).
